Polling for the Next Baronage of the Cleftlands

Hello again all,

Polling day is here! The poll to give your thoughts on the next Baronage of the Cleftlands is now live. Please go to this link to read the candidates’ letters of intent and, when you are ready, fill out the poll:

Baronial Polling

  • The poll will be open until 11:59 pm on February 23. No submissions can be accepted after that time, as all the responses will be sent to Their Majesties for review and Their final decision.
  • Only one submission from each person will be counted, and yes, they do check.
  • If you reside in the official area of the Cleftlands, which is Cuyahoga County, you would fill out the Resident poll.
  • If you live outside of that area, you would fill out the Non-Resident poll, even if you consider Cleftlands to be your home group.
  • All comments and polls are read – so if you do consider Cleftlands as your home group, please say so in your comments! That will weigh in when considering the feedback.
  • If you would like to fill the poll out on paper, you can request the PDF and I will send it to you so that you can print and mail at your leisure. We keep track of the requests to try to make sure all the paper ballots are received. Just make sure it is postmarked by the 23rd!
  • There will be sessions with the candidates to get to know them better. The first will be recorded and released asap after February 6, and the second will be a live discussion held via Zoom on February 16.
  • After the poll is complete, Their Majesties may review and make their decision at their leisure. The decision will be announced, and the new Coronet will be invested at our April 9 event.
  • This whole process is done in collaboration with a Kingdom officer, so everything has been overseen by them to make sure we are acting in accordance with rules and best practices. That will continue to be done throughout the rest of the process. In case you were wondering where all these rules and recommendations come from, there’s an officer for that! 😉

If you have any questions, let me know.

Thank you!

~Claricia

Class: Intro to Heraldry

Meeting Schedule Update (February 2022)

Here is the latest and not-so-greatest news on in-person meetings. The officers met on Thursday evening  and the decision was that, while numbers are trending down, they are not DOWN yet. Seeing the examples set by other Kingdom events, we are going to keep in-person meetings on hold until at least February 23.
The officer team will meet again on February 9 to confirm if things are in a good place to go forward.
Please adjust your calendars to show that the next in-person meeting is currently planned for February 23.
I will work with the candidates for Baron/Baroness to set up round table sessions, but any such sessions will be virtual due to timing (the Baronial poll will end on February 23). Details TBD.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Stay safe, stay warm!
Thanks to everyone,
Claricia de la Mere

Not Necessarily a Cookie Exchange Results

Many thanks to all the participants in our first “Not Necessarily a Cookie” Exchange. I wasn’t sure what to expect and was thrilled when 20-odd people contributed “Not just cookies” to the exchange. Like any first-time performance, there were some rough patches (My apologies to Elizabethe, Milesent and Edward), but they should smooth out if we get to do this again.  See the attached document for participants, and entries.

Cleftlands Baronial Transition & Polling

Greetings Cleftlanders!
Hopefully you have seen the announcement from Their Excellencies that the Barony is beginning the process to help select new person/s to fill the role of Baron and/or Baroness. It is with deep gratitude that I thank Baron Crispin and Baroness Gianna for their service these past 4.5 years. Huzzah!
I’ll be doing the administrative side of this process, and coming at you with even more exciting updates each step of the way.

There’s a lot of information, so please check out this week’s Internebbles newsletter (sent out via email, posted to the website, and on Facebook) for a complete rundown of the process, FAQs, as well as some words from those who held the position previously about what to expect and what qualifications might be good to have in an applicant.

In the meantime, here is a more detailed look:

  • December 1 – Announcement made and the process begins! If you’re interested in applying, this is the time to learn more about what it means to be a Baron/ess.
  • January 1-31 – Anyone who is interested in being included as a candidate for Baron/ess sends the required information to the Baronial Seneschal. That’s me! (seneschal@cleftlands.org). I will review and just make sure all the required documentation is included. Anyone can put their name in for consideration as long as they are a current SCA member and allowed to participate in the SCA and Cleftlands. More details to come!
  • February 2-23 – The applicants are announced and an online poll will be available to vote for your choice and include feedback. The poll will be on the Baronial website, with two options: option 1 for “resident” (those who live within Cuyahoga County) and option 2 for “non-resident” (those who live outside Cuyahoga County). If you live outside Cuyahoga but consider Cleftlands your home, you can note that in your comments on the “non-resident” ballot. All comments are read and considered, so it does matter! It is possible to fill out a paper poll, but paper polls are only available by request – they will not be sent out. If you prefer paper, please make sure to request and send it in plenty of time to be considered.
  • February 24-? The results are collated by the Kingdom Deputy for Transitions and sent to Their Majesties to review and make Their final choice. Again, all notes are included for Them to read, so your comments do matter!

After the announcement of the choice, an investiture date and event will be chosen at a time and place that is convenient for the outgoing Baron and Baroness, the incoming Baron/ess, and Their Majesties.

I will be providing more information as we go, so please keep an eye out for the newsletter as the next step. And send me any questions you might have!

Best regards,

Claricia de la Mere
seneschal@cleftlands.org

Cleftlands Baronial Transition

Greetings unto the populace and friends of the Barony of Cleftlands.

To paraphrase the words of a much beloved author of ours, the wheel of time turns, and ages come and pass, leaving memories. Although it seems like yesterday that we stepped into this role representing the Cleftlands, it was some four and a half years ago and the time for transition approaches. We have chosen to step down as your Baron and Baroness as outlined by Middle Kingdom Law and have begun the preparation for baronial polling for the sixth person(s) who shall represent the Cleftlands in this role.

The time frame for the upcoming baronial polling:

Our baronial seneschal will begin accepting Letters of Intent on January 1st until no later than January 31st. On February 2nd, polling will begin and will be completed no later than February 23rd. Once polling ends, the compiled information will be sent to Their Royal Majesties for consideration, as it is their Right and Privilege to name our successors. We hope to have word no later than mid-April once the Crown makes Their decision and an investiture date is selected.

Although throughout this missive we have spoken of successors, however many combinations are acceptable by Middle Kingdom Law; Baron and Baroness, two Barons, two Baronesses, or a single Baron or Baroness are but some examples.

Over the course of December, we will be available publicly or privately to talk to any who may be interested in the duties and responsibilities of this role. Please reach out to us via email with any questions or scheduling. [ baron@cleftlands.org | baroness@cleftlands.org ]

We thank you all for allowing us the privilege to serve the Barony and we look forward to working with our successors.

Congratulations Prince Arch and Princess Runa!

On Saturday, October 16th in the Barony of Sternfeld their Royal Majesties King Ullr and Queen AnneLyse hosted the 103nd Crown Tournament at the Middle Kingdom. Once the skies cleared and the blows were counted, the Midrealm rejoiced in the knowledge that the heirs to the throne had been revealed. We are pleased to welcome Prince Arch Teryx and Princess Runa Kirri. Congratulations to Their Royal Highnesses!
