The SCA began in May of 1966 in Berkeley, California, when a group of friends hosted a medieval-themed tournament in a backyard. Their enthusiasm quickly grew, and by that summer, a second event had already taken place. They soon began publishing Tournaments Illuminated, a newsletter designed to share their activities beyond the Bay Area. By 1969, the Society had expanded to New York, Chicago, and Phoenix—cities that would become the seeds of the Kingdoms of the East, the Middle, and Atenveldt. Today, the SCA spans nineteen Kingdoms throughout the United States and Canada, with active groups also found across Europe, Australia, and beyond.
What makes the Society unique is its framework, which brings the medieval world to life. Kingdoms are ruled by monarchs chosen through armored combat, and members are recognized as nobles for excellence in service, the arts, or martial skill. Within each Kingdom are smaller branches—principalities, baronies, and shires—supported by officers such as heralds, marshals, and seneschals who keep everything running smoothly.
So what do we do? Our most iconic events are tournaments—vivid recreations of chivalric combat fought in real armor with rattan weapons. These can be individual duels or large-scale melees, and over time, the martial aspect of the Society has developed into a sophisticated and respected practice. Yet tournaments are more than just fighting—they are social gatherings rich with activity. You’ll find music, dancing, games, crafts, and conversations with people from all walks of life.
Feasts and revels often follow events, offering a chance to enjoy historically inspired cuisine and period entertainment ranging from drama and music to storytelling and dancing. Beyond tournaments, the SCA hosts a wide variety of events including themed fairs, quests, classes, and even full-scale wars. These gatherings are built on the creativity, generosity, and skill of countless volunteers who bring the medieval world to life in thoughtful, engaging ways.
What draws many people to the SCA is the opportunity to pursue skills and interests in a hands-on, supportive environment. From calligraphy and costuming to blacksmithing and brewing, members create not just for show, but for real use and enjoyment. While authenticity is our goal, a sense of curiosity, inclusion, and fun remains at the heart of it all.
If you’re curious, the best way to get involved is simply to attend an event. All that’s required is an attempt at pre-17th-century attire—no need for perfection, just a willingness to participate. The Society is not a performance for spectators—it’s a community, and you’re invited to take part. Many members adopt a medieval name and persona, which adds to the immersive experience. And while Western European traditions are most common, we welcome a wide range of cultures, from Moorish to Japanese, Viking to Byzantine.
Between events, local groups hold weekly meetings to plan activities, teach skills, and welcome new members. You’re welcome to visit, in or out of costume, and see what interests you. To deepen your experience, we recommend becoming a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc., which includes access to your Kingdom’s newsletter and the SCA’s quarterly magazine, Tournaments Illuminated.
The Society offers nearly endless opportunities to explore, learn, and connect. The next step is yours.
