Cleftlands Open House

The Barony of the Cleftlands, the Cuyahoga County (Cleveland), Ohio chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. will be hosting an open house in lieu of our regular Wednesday meeting in Euclid, OH on the September 28th from 7:00 to 10:00 PM.

The SCA is an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. Our “Known World” consists of 20 kingdoms, with over 30,000 members residing in countries around the world. Members, dressed in clothing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, attend events which feature tournaments, royal courts, feasts, dancing, various classes & workshops, and more.

Demos

  • Mapleside Demo is this weekend: Setup is Fri starting at 5:30. On Sat and Sun, show up around 9 am.
  • Please bring things for Hospitality Table for participants. We have our own parking lot at the top of the hill. Birna will be there to hand out the wristbands. Come have a good time. Contact Artair with questions on Facebook.
  • Remember that Sept 28 will be the Newcomer’s Revel after Mapleside.

Barons

  • Kingdom mandates polling about the Barons at least every five years. The process, which is driven by the Kingdom, will begin sometime in October. At that time, any paid member or couple interested in serving may submit their name for consideration as the next Baron/ess of Cleftlands. Calum and Constanza are requesting of their Majesties that they step down at NOWM next year.
  • After candidates are nominated, polling will begin. Any paid member living in the Barony will be sent a poll, and paid members outside the Barony but participating here may request polls of Kingdom. When polling is complete, their Majesties will consider the poll as they appoint the next Baron/ess.

  • Mapleside Demo is Sept 17-18, with setup on Sept 16 evening. There are many volunteers but more are always needed. There are more information on the Facebook event page: everyone on the Cleftlands page has been invited, or can share the invite with you upon request. You can also check with Artair directly for information.

Events

  • Claricia is organizing the feast for Regular Event in Jan 2017. She’s looking for help in all aspects of the kitchen: cooking, cleaning, plating, and serving. She’s also looking for those who can make Hero Dishes to present to champions, victors, and others, which should be made in advance. Please check with her to volunteer or learn more about the feast.

    • The November 30 Revel will host a formal Armored Tourney. All Armored combatants are invited to participate.

  • Sir Crispin is asking for information about the projects people have carried out in July, August and September for the A&S report due at the end of September. He also asked for people interested in teaching classes at meeting to let him know. Mistress Maria noted that teaching at meeting is a good preparation for teaching at events or Pennsic.
  • On September 7 Dulcia will be teaching a class on Block Printing on Fabric at next week’s meeting, starting at 7:30.
  • The September Dessert Revel (9/28) will also be the Newcomer’s meeting to greet those coming from the Mapleside Demo. Please come all dressed up, and with activities or displays to share with others. The same day will be the next Cook’s Challenge, on the theme of Apples and Pears.

  • CleftlandsMapofWorldVelvet is the ‘Regional Cheerleader’ for the Dragon’s Rose Challenge: a year-long Kingdom-wide challenge to rapier fighters to gain points for practice, events, special activities, and teaching. The combatant with the highest score at the end of the year will earn a prize of $100 and a custom-made buckler, while the group with the highest collective score will be awarded $500. Please contact Velvet for details on what is involved and how to get registered.

  • Calum announced the many awards and honors awarded Cleftlanders at Pennsic, including:
    • Tarquin and Aelius, both of Vito’s Minions, received their Award of Arms
    • Corvinus of Vito’s Minions received the Dragon’s Tooth
    • The North Oaken Rapier Corps and Vito’s Minions received Dragons’ Teeth
    • Sifu and Virus of Vito’s Minions joined the Red Company
    • Gianna received her Dragon’s Heart
    • Elizabethe and Eikbrandr were both elevated to the Order of the Laurel
    • Thorin was elevated to the Order of Chivalry
    • Sorcha brecc ingen Donnchada was one of the Midrealm A&S Champions
    • Of the 20 archery champions, 7 were from Cleftlands: Tarmach, Muldonney, Ephraim, Garvin teh Slow, James Barkley, Garvin the Younger, and Ian Rengarthson.
    • 8 Cleftlands knights participated on the Belted Champions team: Eikbrandr, Alaric, Radagaisus, Nikolai, Kjartan, Silverthorn, Ulfr, and Wigthegn.
    • On the Unbelted Champions team were Ivan, Sirius, Bastian, Corvus Corvinus, Hauk, and Avengar.
    • Many thanks were given to the support teams including the Baronial tent setup and tear down teams, Oliver for tent transport and the new Battlefield Hospitality team led by Claricia, Dorothea, and Angharad.
    • Constanza announced that the Order of St. Clairiel had been awarded, at Standard Bearers, to both the Armored Combat Unit for their services in the MOAB Battle at Pennsic, and to the whole of the Battlefield Hospitality crew.
  • She introduced the new Champions:

    • Muldonny McVriw as Rapier Champion
    • Gwynedd Cole, Archery Champion
    • Pietro Nicolo da San Tebaldo, Arts & Sciences Champion
  • Many thanks were given to the staff of Standard Bearers including: Jolicia, Denis, Lassarina, Dmitrii, Fritha, and Gianna; those running competitions, including Nadya, Bastian, Velvet, Caitilín, and Elizabethe, and those who arranged food including Robin, Sergei, Angharad and all the kitchen staff, and Oliver, for again transporting the Baronial tent. Also, great thanks were given to our site hosts, Julianne and Llewellyn and their neighbor Beth.

  • Baroness Constanza:
    • This year’s Nebbles Game.
      • Every participating camp will receive one white and one blue nebble, each worth 1 point. There’s also a red nebble, worth 5 points. The game starts noon on Monday of Peace Week and ends on midnight of the final Friday. Bring or send the nebble to Standard Bearer’s for the final accounting and determining the winning camp.
      • The nebbles must be in plain site and in a public area. Once the nebble is stolen, a camp member can demand the nebble back by addressing the thief by their SCA name. Once the thief has reached safety in another camp, the nebble is stolen, and will need to be stolen back. Chasing a thief is OK, but no grappling, tackling, or manhandling is acceptable.

  • If any combatant would like a new baronial tabard to fight in at Pennsic this year, please notify Madelaine or Constanza by end of meeting next week (6/22) to allow time to have them made.
  • June Dessert Revel will be the next Cleftlands Rapier Tourney to occur outside, if possible.
  • We’re still looking for someone to transport the Cleftlands Baronial Tent to Pennsic to shade the heavy combatants on the field.
  • At Standard Bearers, the A&S theme will be “Of the Cleftlands” – please be prepared to explain how your entry is about the Cleftlands or a member of the Cleftlands.

  • The newest heirs of the Middle Kingdom are Prince Edmund and Princess Kateryn.
  • At the Kingdom A&S Faire, Sir Eikbrandr took a first in decorative metalwork, Baroness Angharad, Lady Claricia, Lady Elizabella, and the Cleftlands Cooks took firsts in cooking, single and multiple dish; Lady Sazia (Dasani) took a first and a second in glasswork, Lord Tarmach a second in play writing, and Baroness Zuriel, who participated in the pentathlon took three first and a second, and was the second highest pentathlon scorer.
  • During the day, Captain Ivan Shishov won the Armored Tourney, Lord Tarmach won the Archery Tourney, Lady Kateline stepped up as Kingdom Exchequer.
  • The last meeting in June will be the Rapier Tourney, to be held outdoors, possibly at the Bocce Ball court.
  • At Standard Bearer’s the theme of the A&S competition will be ‘Of Cleftlands” about the Barony, members of it, or any related theme.
  • We’re still looking for someone to help transport the Baronial Pavilion, and to organize Battlefield Hospitality.
