Baronial Polling Information

The Baronial polling document for non-members and those living outside of Cuyahoga County is now available online:

Paid SCA members living within Cuyahoga County will be receiving their Baronial polls via USPS postal mail.

Please take a moment to fill out the form with your commentary on the candidates – this input is critical to help Their Royal Majesties decide upon the leadership of the Barony for the next five years.

All polls must be postmarked by January 7, 2017.

Announcements

  • Crispin is stepping down as Minister of Arts and Sciences. Please talk to him if you have any questions about the role. You can submit your name and other information online at cleftlands.org.
  • Baronial polls have been mailed out to all SCA members in Cuyahoga County. A link will be posted on cleftlands.org for non-members or non-residents to download a copy of the poll. They need to be returned to the Kingdom by 7-Jan.
  • Before we leave the site, we need to empty the garbage cans. To avoid us carrying out many nearly unused garbage bags, please try to focus on one or more cans.
  • Next Wed is our Yule Revel, and our last meeting of 2016.
  • Elizabethe is organizing the Revel’s Craftperson’s Faire. Please bring your current or recently finished projects to share.
  • Robin is organizing the Dessert table. An empty Dessert Table is a sad table so please bring your Yule treats to fill it up.
  • There will be dancing. Come and give it a try.
  • There will also be a class for beginnings on sewing your first garb.

Events

  • Regular Event is 28-Jan.
  • January Event pre-registration is now open. You can pre-reg for the event, for feast, and for boxed lunches delivered at the list field. Madelaine is also looking for a deputy who can help ensure the Troll is open at meetings when she has conflicts.
  • Rowan is organizing the lunch tavern, and fighters’ lunch. She’s looking for help both in advance and the day of.
  • The class list for the event is on the website.
  • Artair and MedVedn’Hoytnik (sorry, can’t spell Russian) is organizing the feast servers again this year. If you’re interested in joining them, please contact Artair at meeting or on Facebook.
  • Colette is organizing the event’s Craftspersons Display. Please come and share any projects you’ve worked on, or finished, or skills you’ve developed.
  • Claricia’s feast menu is posted online. She’s still looking for additional Hero Dishes. And there’s always a need for help in the kitchen before and at hte event.
  • Kateline, as royalty liaison, is looking for largesse to share with the royalty.

    • At Xmas Tourney, Lotte Winterborn was the Laurel’s Choice in the A&S event. Sirius made it to the final 16 of the tourney, while Thorin was in the final 4.
    • This next weekend is Yule Feast in Red Spears, with many classes as well as both armored and rapier tourneys.
    • If you’d like to make January Event court fun, submit award recommendations before 6-Jan.
  • Calum
    • Please bring your best garb and other items to Dessert Revel for our annual party.
    • Please make sure you submit your polls: the Crown really needs to know your opinion, and that you care enough about it to actually submit polls.

Baronial Candidate Q & A

Greetings to all members of the Cleftlands populace!

The polls for the Cleftlands Baronial Transition have been sent to all active members living within Cuyahoga County; expect to receive them in the next few days.

For those non-members and individuals residing outside Cuyahoga County, the non-member poll will be available on the Middle Kingdom website shortly. The location will be posted as soon as it is available.

All polls must be returned by January 7, 2017 to be included in the populace feedback to Their Royal Majesties.

The Baronial candidates, Sör Crispin de la Rochefoucauld and THL Gianna Vettori, will be available for an informal Q&A evening this upcoming Wednesday (December 7) during regular meeting times – you are welcome to bring your questions to them at this time.

Congratulations Sirius of Cleftlands!

On Wednesday, November 30, the Cleftlands lists were opened up to all armored combatants to test their mettle in the annual tournament. Twenty inspired combatants stepped  forth and took to the lists. When the flurry of rattan slowed and the last blows were counted, one armored combatant emerged victorious and earned the right to carry the Cleftlands sword. Congratulations to Sargent Sirius of Cleftlands for winning the tournament and to Captain Tariq al Sanna Af Fjall for winning the esteem of the ladies gallery.

  • In the new year, the Royal Family will appoint the new Barons Cleftlands, using the feedback in the poll results to guide their decision. However, this is NOT an election. Your feedback about the candidates, both positive and negative, will be considered along with the actual votes.

    • We are exploring options for a new meeting site: please submit your suggestions online. A small committee will contact sites to get standard information from each. Sites that meet the basic criteria will be presented to Officers for comment, and then the acceptable sites are brought to the populace. We may not need to change but we’re exploring our options.

    • At Crown Tourney, two Cleftlanders distinguished themselves. Silverthorn was awarded prize for “Most Dramatic Death.” Ask for a replay – it was good.
    • Vigthis the Younger, Wynfang’s squire, received his Award of Arms.
    • Brendokenfest is this weekend: they will be choosing Baronial champions, and have many newcomers activities. It’s only about an hour and a half away.
    • The end of this month is the Halloween Dessert Revel. Please come with your costume, food, and conviviality.
  • Constanza
    • Nov 30 is the next Armored Tourney. Anyone authorized in armored combat can join: bringing your inspiration and best kit.
    • Polling schedule: Ginevra is now accepting letters of intent related to the choice of the new Barons. She can accept them through 16-Nov.
    • We are exploring options for a new meeting site: please submit your suggestions online. A small committee will contact sites to get standard information from each. Sites that meet the basic criteria will be presented to Officers for comment, and then the acceptable sites are brought to the populace. We may not need to change but we’re exploring our options.

  • Polls will be mailed to all paid members with mailing addresses within Cuyahoga County. You can update your mailing address at sca.org. A generic poll form will be posted online, for non-resident members or non-members to print and mail in.
  • Candidate’s Letters of Intent can be submitted to transition@cleftlands.org, between 19-Oct and 16-Nov. They will be collected and sent to the Kingdom Transitions Deputy. The letters should include:
    • SCA and Legal names
    • SCA Titles
    • Contact information: address, email, and phone
    • Copies of your membership cards
    • Copies of an ID card such as for Pennsic.
    • Any other information such as your SCA history or your intentions that you think would be useful to the Royalty or Transition Deputy.
  • Polls can be returned between 18-Dec and 7-Jan.
  • In the new year, the Royal Family will appoint the new Barons Cleftlands, using the feedback in the poll results to guide their decision. However, this is NOT an election. Your feedback about the candidates, both positive and negative, will be considered along with the actual votes. The dates will be at their convenience.

  • The Martial Survey for all combatants is accessible through Cleftlands.org. The Marshallate is expecting 100% compliance, as the information will be used to create the database of authorizations.
  • Ginevra will be taking over as temporary seneschal until the Baronial transition is completed.
  • Due to the holidays, there will be no meetings on 23-Nov, 21-Dec, or 28-Dec. Please plan accordingly.

Guilds

Guilds are the special interest groups of the SCA: people working together to focus on a particular activity. Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings.

    • We’ll continue to announce steps in the new transition, which is being driven on the Kingdom’s schedule.

Cleftlands Baronial Transition

The Barony of Cleftlands in the Region of Northern Oaken is preparing to conduct a poll in order to provide counsel to the Crown regarding Their choice for Baron and Baroness. The poll will tentatively take place in the months of December and January. Non-member polls will be available at that time on the Middle Kingdom Seneschal’s website.

Letters of Intent

Quoting the Midrealm Transition Policy:

The baronial seneschal will collect letters of intent from all candidates who wish to run for Baron/Baroness for a period not to exceed thirty days. The letters must include: SCA name and any title(s), legal name, mailing address, phone number, e-mail address, copy of valid membership card, copy of photo id, and any other information the candidate wishes. At the end of the collection period, the group seneschal will forward the letters to the Transitions Deputy.

Schedule

  • October 19 – Letters of Intent submission process opens.
  • November 16 – Letters of Intent submission process closes.
  • December 18 – Populace polling begins for residents of Cleftlands. Non-member polls may be downloaded on the Midrealm Seneschal’s website.
  • January 7 – Populace polling ends.
  • June 11, 2017 – Baronial transition at Northern Oaken War Maneuvers (pending final Crown approval).

Letters of Intent may be submitted electronically to transition@cleftlands.org from October 19 until November 16.

Events

  • Regular Event registration begins at the 10/26 Dessert Revel.
  • Fighters and fencers can register in advance for a $5 box lunch delivered to the list fields to ensure you get lunch when the fighting allows. This lunch must be paid for in advance.
  • The theme of the event is “Love vs Death.” Many areas are looking for volunteers and help including:
    • Jolicia – Hall Decorations
    • Sorcha – Classes
    • Claricia – help before and during feast, servers
    • Brendan – Dishwashers
  • For the 26-Oct Dessert Revel Cook’s Challenge, the theme is Food in Costumes – Subtleties and Surprises.” The idea is food trying to look like something it’s not: meat that looks like apples, chicken that looks like knights, sugar that looks like a crown.

  • Robert: Accounts for Standard Bearers are finally reconciled. We lost $647 on the event primarily due to increased insurance costs and low attendance.

    • At Harvest Days, Vincent Furnier was elevated to the Order of Defense.
    • At Coronation, Bastian authorized Bastard Sword, Zuriel joined the King’s Merry Men by out-shooting him, Zuriel also won the recurve Bow shoot, and Lote won the Cultural Identity A&S challenge.
    • At Red Dragon, Meinhard won the populace vote at the Craftsperson’s Faire; the team of Ivan, Thorgrimm, and Eskill won the Dragonslayer Tourney; Sirius won the Red Company level of the Ladder of Reknown tourney, while Ivan won the Golden Mace level, Avengar’s team was in teh finals of the Chevauche tourney sponsored by James ap Llewellyn; Lynette la Rus was awarded the Golden Affodil, a Middle Marches baronial award; Lorimer won the dance challenge; Vlad won a fencing Tourney, and Constanza authorized in bastard Sword.
    • The upcoming Rose Tourney consists of teams of fighters, fencers, and archers, each sponsored by a member of the Order of the Rose. There are still teams, including the Queen’s, looking for members, so check online if you’d like to participate.
  • Calum:
    • November 30 is the next Cleftlands Tourney for Armored Combatants. Anyone interested may come and participate: please bring your best kit and the one who inspires who.
    • The next step in the Baronial polling is underway on the timeline set by the Kingdom. Calum and Constanza will be available all during next meeting, 12-Oct, for anyone with questions about the role. Written applications will be accepted via email to transition@cleftlands.org from October 19 until November 16/ The polls will be mailed to all paid members living in the Cleftlands by December 18. The collection of polls will end on January 7 or when otherwise indicated by Kingdom. The Crown will then review the polls received and make their decision with a tentative transition at Northern Oaken War Maneuvers on June 11, 2017.
    • If your mailing address is not in Cuyahoga County, you may request a poll from the seneschal or download one from the Midrealm Seneschal website as one will not be mailed to you.

  • We’ll be restricted to the downstairs for meetings for the time being.

  • Regular Event theme is Love and Death. Volunteers are still needed. Contact Dimtrii about where you can help. Contact Sorcha about teaching a class at the event. Claricia is looking for help in the kitchen: both before the event to make Hero dishes and during.
  • Newcomer’s Revel is next Wednesday. Please let Sor Crispin know what displays or activities you’ll be bringing to share. We will have limited space, as we’ll be downstairs only, so please consider that when choosing what to bring. If you can bring banners or hangings, coordinate getting them up with Dimitri.
  • On 10/5, Ashley will be teaching a class on Beaded flowers.
