Midrealm Royal Succession

Greetings unto the populace (and friends) of the Barony of the Cleftlands. As many different sources have been reporting, We would again like to speak as the voice of the Crown and the Society to inform you of the most recent updates pertaining to Crown Tournament and the line of succession within the Midrealm during these tumultuous times.

In unprecedented times, we must take unprecedented measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the great Midrealm Populace. A pandemic continues to spread throughout the Midrealm and other Kingdoms of the Known World. Their Majesties, Felix and Madeleina, and Curia continue to monitor the situation with hopes that we may meet in person soon, and do so safely.

As you are aware, at this time the Middle Kingdom has no Heirs having been unable to gather for purposes of the Crown Tournament. The summer continues to wane while the pandemic persists, leaving uncertainty and disquiet in its wake. And with no Heirs, the Fall Coronation looms, empty of our typical joy leaving only further concern.

Many have inquired regarding these events and how best to secure the Dragon throne. Many of the Populace have called out requesting a continuance of Their Majesties’ reign. Royal Peers, those who have sat the Dragon Throne and understand the burden of the Crown, requested Their Majesties to consider holding the throne longer than was initially anticipated. Likewise, the members of the Middle Kingdom’s Curia beseeched Their Majesties to continue to lead the Middle Kingdom and provide the Populace with continuity and stability.

Their Majesties, have gracefully reflected on these requests and have agreed to continue to Reign. It is the hope of the Crown and Curia to have sufficient plans in place to permit the Fall Crown Tournament as regularly scheduled in October of 2020, assuming a suitable place can be determined which would permit such activity. If this can be done, Their Majesties will continue to reign until the beginning of March in 2021, with Their Heirs assuming the Dragon Throne until the usual transition of Fall Coronation in 2021.

This is the most certainty we can provide at this time. We ask for patience and understanding while we continue to work through details and unknowns. Variables continue to change even as we attempt to plan. Know that attendance for the Fall Crown Tournament will likely be extremely limited, although we do plan to stream it live. We will continue to plan for Heirs, even if circumstances dictate we are unable to move forward with the October 2020 date as currently planned.
The generosity and flexibility of Their Majesties continues to benefit the Middle Kingdom. Our Kingdom continues to remain secure and holds high hopes to be together again, safe and sound.

Long live the King and Queen!! Draco Invictus!!

Yours in Service,
Cerridwen verch Ioreword
Middle Kingdom Seneschal

If you have any questions or concerns about this continuance, please reach out to us and Lady Claricia de la Mere via email at: baron@cleftlands.org, baroness@cleftlands.org, seneschal@cleftlands.org.

July: Pennsic Project Challenge

Time to start your Pennsic 49 project ! July is when we start that project we meant to work on for the last 10 months, the one we really want done for Pennsic. This year, we have more time to work…or perhaps, to procrastinate on that project. Beat the rush: start your Pennsic 49 project now!

To participate, start your Pennsic 49 project. You don’t have to finish, just get started. Take a picture, or type up some notes and share what you’ve started.

It doesn’t matter what your ‘project start’ involves: your first page of notes, an order for the fabric, your initial drawing of the thing, whatever. Just actually start it, and share it with us as comments on the Facebook event (https://www.facebook.com/events/691876191372876/), or email it to baronessangharad@gmail.com

We’re accepting posts through until Landgrab weekend (7/23/20).

Congratulations Summer 2020 Award Recipients!

Congratulations to all the recent Award recipients for July, August, and September!

Meeting Minutes: 24-June-55

NOTE: At this time, Middle Kingdom SCA-related activities are cancelled or postponed until July 1. This meeting was held virtually via Zoom and streamed to YouTube. If you would like to view the YouTube stream, click here!

Baron and Baroness, Crispin and Gianna

  • A new missive has come from the Crown that upcoming gatherings resuming after July 1 must be limited to 10 people or fewer.
  • To that end, we have decided that it does not make sense to go forward with regular business meetings at this time.
  • Any gatherings that occur need to follow the guidelines put forth by the Kingdom, and cannot include any martial or ranged activities. Please see additional information regarding the guidelines in the Seneschal’s notes.
  • Based on an idea put forth on the East Kingdom page We are looking for people who are already researching, or are interested in starting research to create or share virtual classes in areas such as:1. Women in history
    2. Women in European history
    3. Diversity of cultures that traveled to Europe
    4. People of color in history
    5. People of color in European history
    6. South American/African/Asian/Native American cultures pre-17th century
    7. LGBTQIA people in history
    8. LGBTQIA people in European history
    9. People with disabilities in history
    10. People with disabilities in European history
Or, if you have a topic on historical diversity, let us know what you want to talk about! We’re open to suggestions.
  • Please reach out to us with any questions, concerns, or if you would like to teach a class.

Seneschal, Claricia

  • Any meetings need to follow the Kingdom’s required precautions (including the 10 person limit), may not contain any martial or ranged activities, and must use the required sign-in sheets. Sign-in sheets must be sent to seneschal@cleftlands.org within 48 hours of the event for contact tracing if needed (hopefully not!). We hope that people will meet!!
  • It is up to the person hosting how they want to limit the gathering. Each household contains a different amount of people who live in it, so the additional numbers will vary depending on who is home.
  • Here are the required forms to have an official gathering for guilds or other allowed SCA activities:
Required precautions (please post at any gatherings): https://library.midrealm.org/mdocs-posts/guide-meetings-required-precautions/
    Required attendance form: https://library.midrealm.org/mdocs-posts/form-meeting-attendance-form/
  • Please welcome the Lord Rojhon the Wanderer as our new Minister of Youth. He will be stepping up on July 15. We thank Lady Zofia for her years of service!
  • The Kingdom Seneschal has posted a missive on doxxing, which has been shared to the Kingdom page and the Baronial group. Doxxing is sharing or making public someone’s personal information, especially their physical address, without their permission. While we have access to the personal information of our members, we ask that no one share this information without permission. Inquiries from law enforcement should of course be handled appropriately.
  • Please reach out with any questions!

Baron and Baroness, Crispin and Gianna

  • Good evening, Cleftlands and welcome to this week’s baronial meeting. We hope that you have all been well and we hope to be able to see you all soon, on that note:
  • We would like to discuss the recently released missive from the Crown and Curia regarding resuming non-martial activities within the Midrealm, and specifically how we will move forward as a barony.
  • First, we are working closely with the seneschalate to be sure that we are following state, county, city, and site guidelines so we meet safely.
  • We wish to highlight that Kingdom has decreed that there will be no martial activities at this time. To use a modern term, this is a “soft opening”.
  • Finally, we would encourage you to review the video missive and printed materials released by Kingdom and Curia independently.
  • We wish to reiterate that these plans do not mean we are going to abandon the new ways of interacting virtually, just that we are exploring our options so we can unobtrusively integrate the two and continue to be inclusive for all levels of participation and comfort.
  • If you have any questions or suggestions on the subject, we welcome your input. Please reach out to us in email or on Facebook Messenger.
  • These are tense times and we want to remind everyone that one of the hallmarks of the SCA is courtesy, please keep this in mind as we communicate online so that if we have differences we can have the opportunity to work them out face to face.
  • A virtual baronial court will be held June 13 in place of NOWM. See information on how to submit award recommendations on the baronial website.

June Cooks Challenge: Cooking Over Fire

We were going to have our semi-annual “Cooking over Fire” get-together sometime around now. Instead, we’ll do it the physically distancing way. Your challenge is:

  • Try cooking something over a wood or charcoal fire that you have never tried before.

Don’t make this too easy: If you’ve never actually cooked over a wood fire, feel free to grill a couple of hot dogs. However, if you grill regularly, try something new to you: roast a whole fish, braise something in a ceramic pot, or try baking a cake. Whatever it is, please share a picture of it on the grill, your recipe, and some notes about what, for you, was new. Did you learn anything from this?

Please load your pictures and notes to the event in the Barony of the Cleftlands Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/events/179249673473549/) or to me by email (baronessangharad@gmail.com)

June A&S Challenge: Heraldry in any Medium

In honor of the summer tourneys we are missing and the battlefields that will see no banners this year, our June A&S Challenge is:

  • A heraldic display or item

Use your choice of medium: whether a painted silk banner, an embroidered favor, or a carved leather pouch. Use your own arms, or those of the barony, or kingdom, or of someone you’d like to gift. Whatever you make, please share a picture, some notes about how you made it, and how you plan to use or display it.

By the way, if you do not actually have any arms currently registered, I will also accept a completed Device Submission form, all ready-to-go to the Escutcheon Herald and began the trek through the authorization process.

Please submit your info to the Challenge Event on the Barony of the Cleftlands FaceBook page (https://www.facebook.com/events/251359769642477/), or to me (baronessangharad@gmail.com) via email.

A&S: Virtual Armourer’s 28-May

If you have an armouring project you have recently completed, please bring it and show it off. If you have a project you are working on, please share your progress. Ask about that project you would like to do, but don’t know how to get started. Every armoured combatant in the SCA has a vested interest in armouring, but most are too intimidated to pick up a hammer. It’s fun, you can do it, we can help
