King Arthur Movie Premier

The Barony of the Cleftlands was asked to provide a demonstration for the sneak preview of the new King Arthur movie at Valley View Cinema. Twenty-three members attended and spoke with patrons and provided literature to generate interest in our group and activities.

The movie received mixed reviews. Some energetically enjoyed it for its action scenes, character development, and awesomeness while others panned it for the many inaccuracies in the mythology, disregard for historical consistency in the costuming, and Guy Ritchie.

Special thanks to Sir Artair Mac Neacail for organizing a great event!

A whiz at note taking and actually filing class handouts when you get home? Bring your best suggestions. Already know about some upcoming classes not to be missed? Come tell us about them. Great handouts from last classes you want to share? By all means. Newcomer? Welcome and pull up a chair!

Happy 52nd Birthday, SCA!

An invitation to the first SCA gathering at UC Berkeley on May 1, 1966.

The Barony of the Cleftlands would like to wish the Society for Creative Anachronism Happy 52nd Birthday!

An abridged history from the annuls of Wikipedia:

The SCA’s roots can be traced to a backyard graduation party of a UC Berkeley medieval studies graduate, the author Diana Paxson, in Berkeley, California, on May Day in 1966. The party began with a “Grand Tournament” in which the participants wore helmets, fencing masks, and usually some semblance of a costume, and sparred with each other using weapons such as plywood swords, padded maces, and fencing foils. It ended with a parade down Telegraph Avenue with everyone singing “Greensleeves”. […] The name Berkeley Society for Creative Anachronism was coined […] when the nascent group needed an official name in order to reserve a park for a tournament. “Berkeley” was dropped as the group expanded.

Congratulations Avanger of Brendoken!

On Wednesday, April 26th, the Cleftlands lists were opened up to all armored combatants to test their mettle in the bi-annual tournament. Numerous inspired combatants stepped forth and took to the lists. When the flurry of rattan, sweat, and dramatic deaths slowed and the last blows were counted, one armored combatant emerged victorious and earned the right to carry the Cleftlands sword. Congratulations to the Lord Avanger of Brendoken for winning the tournament and to Lady Æthelwynn Skerra Dimma for winning the esteem of the ladies gallery.

In addition to the armored festivities, the office of the seneschal changed hands from the honorable Lady Gianna Vettori to Lord Cadfan of Cleftlands.

The list included:

  • Sir Thorin Eikskjald
  • Sir Laurelen Darksbane
  • Sargent Kari Garanhirson
  • Sargent Haukr Myrkjarten
  • Sargent Njall Orkneyjarson
  • Sargent Tariq al Sanna Af Fjall

  • Lady Æthelwynn Skerra Dimma
  • Lady Bláár MacDougall
  • Edrik Eiksson
  • Lord Marellus Kilianus
  • Lord Gylis Scot
  • Tryggr Gillison

Armored combatants include: (Back) X, X, Sir Crispin al-Rumi, Lord Avanger of Brendoken, X, Sir Thorin Eikskjald, Sir Karl Ulfson, Baroness Constanza de Mendoza, Baron Calum MacDhaibhidh, Duke EikBrandr Solgyafi, Sir Laurelen Darksbane, Sargent Kari Garanhirson, Forester Muldonny McVriw, X, X, Sargent Tariq al Sanna Af Fjall, Sargent Njall Orkneyjarson, (Front) Tryggr Gillison, X, Lady Æthelwynn Skerra Dimma, Lady Bláár MacDougall, Edrik Eiksson, Lord Marellus Kilianus, X, Lord Gylis Scot, Sargent Haukr Myrkjarten, Duke Alen Elegil . A&S: Osenstitch Viking Embroidery

This class will feature the Osenstitch and variations that was found in the Birka and Ousegate digs. The class will go over a brief history of the find and area. The embroidery is based off of Anges Geijer’s doctorate thesis on the Birka dig and her sketches of the embroidery stitch. We will also do a modern variant called the Hungarian Braid Stitch. Class will run for 45 minutes. There will be 6 hoops and thread ready for the class but people are welcome to bring their own materials. Handouts available: 10.

A&S: Storytelling for Kids

Designed FOR youth, this is designed to bring out the inner ham that resides in nearly every kid. Every kid knows a story. Every kid can tell a story. This is a “Bardic Safe Zone” where the audience is forgiving and encouraging, goofs and flubs and false starts are forgiven, and a few simple tips, tricks, and sources will be shared. Parents strongly encouraged to attend.

Instructor is a seasoned storyteller and former Kingdom Bardic Champion, and a parent of four, all fearless (modern-world) performers. Course content developed in consultation with a Professor of Children’s Literature and the Department of Early Childhood Education at Lakeland Community College.

Cleftlands Scribal Display

The Honorable Lord Pietro Nicolo da San Tebaldo, the deputy Minister of Arts & Sciences in the Cleftlands, issued a themed dessert revel which took place on March 29. Members of the barony were encouraged to display scrolls they had received through the years. Over a hundred scribal works were displayed, spanning not only the decades but many different styles and time periods. Among the most unique, a triptych painted on wood of a Dragon’s Heart for Master Elfäedur by Lord Pietro Nicolo da San Tebaldo and an embroidered Order of the Chivalry scroll for Sir Lorimer MacAltin of the Garioch by then-queen Duchess Caitlin Stuart. To view the larger collection of scrolls displayed, please visit the Barony of the Cleftlands Facebook Album.
