Cleftlands Armored Tournament

Their Excellencies Calum and Constanza, fourth Baron and Baroness of the Cleftlands, cordially invite you to their final armored tournament held Wednesday, April 28nd in Euclid, OH. All authorized armored combatants are welcome to participate. The tournament will commence around 7:45 PM. If competing, please arrive early enough to make known your intentions to the List Table as well as reporting in to the Heralds who will not only announce you, but help you process into the tourney by Order of Precedence. Non-combatants, please honor the participants and dress your best in support of their valiant efforts.

  • Colette announced there are two classes next week: the second part of Oliver’s shoe-making class, and a Pennsic Roundtable.
  • The Iron Key Refurbishment scheduled for 3/16 is cancelled on account of a birthday.
  • Milesent has released the first quarterly Forum since 2009. She’ll be posting it online for anyone who wasn’t able to pick up a copy. If you have items or articles of interest to share in the next issue, please send them to her.

A&S: Making Leather Shoes

This two part class will cover the making of a simple shoe. Part one will cover patterning, measuring, and sewing methods. Part two will cover assembly, soles, and fitting. Please note shoes cannot be completed in the allotted two hours at meeting, so homework will be expected, upwards of 8 hours for the actual construction. Please bring scissors and paper for patterning.

Pennsic University is truly an academic “one of a kind.” It can also be daunting for a newcomer and sometimes something of a coin flip for seasoned alumni. This will be an open discussion on topics such as how to choose classes, how to keep track of schedules during what is always a hectic two weeks, and how to maximize your experience. A whiz at note taking and actually filing class handouts when you get home? Bring your best suggestions. Already know about some upcoming classes not to be missed? Come tell us about them. Great handouts from last classes you want to share? By all means. Newcomer? Welcome and pull up a chair!

A&S: Osenstitch Viking Embroidery

This class will feature the Osenstitch and variations that was found in the Birka and Ousegate digs. The class will go over a brief history of the find and area. The embroidery is based off of Anges Geijer’s doctorate thesis on the Birka dig and her sketches of the embroidery stitch. We will also do a modern variant called the Hungarian Braid Stitch. Class will run for 45 minutes. There will be 6 hoops and thread ready for the class but people are welcome to bring their own materials. Handouts available: 10.

A&S: Scribal Gallery

There will be a Scribal Gallery to show off all of the amazing pieces of art the good gentles of our Barony have given away freely. If you have one or a few of these pieces of art made by the hands of someone in our Barony, I invite you to bring your Illuminations to be displayed so that all may gaze upon the talent of our scribes. They will be displayed from 7:30 – 9:00 PM.

Congratulations Pietro Nicolo da San Tebaldo!

On Wednesday, February 22nd, the Cleftlands lists were opened up to all rapier combatants to test their mettle in the bi-annual tournament. Eleven inspired combatants stepped  forth and took to the lists. When the flurry of steel, spoons, and stuffed otters slowed and the last blows were counted, one rapier combatant emerged victorious and earned the right to carry the Cleftlands sword. Congratulations to the Honorable Lord Pietro Nicolo da San Tebaldo for winning the tournament and to Lord Levi Athan of Cleftlands for winning the esteem of the ladies gallery.

In addition to the rapier festivities, their Excellencies Calum and Constanza bestowed the Award of Saint Alfred to the Honorable Lord Muldonny McVriw and Lady Gwynedd Cole in recognition of their dedication to supporting the archery community and their gracious hosting of a regional archery practice.

A&S: Making Temple Rings

Learn to make a type of jewelry worn by medieval Rus and Slav women. Students will leave class with at least one pair of temple rings.There will be kits for $5 for at least 10 students. Auditors welcome. Students who have their own wire cutters and round nose pliers are encouraged to bring them.

Youth must be able to use sharp wire cutters without supervision.

A&S: Storytelling for Kids

Designed FOR youth, this is designed to bring out the inner ham that resides in nearly every kid. Every kid knows a story. Every kid can tell a story. This is a “Bardic Safe Zone” where the audience is forgiving and encouraging, goofs and flubs and false starts are forgiven, and a few simple tips, tricks, and sources will be shared. Parents strongly encouraged to attend.

Instructor is a seasoned storyteller and former Kingdom Bardic Champion, and a parent of four, all fearless (modern-world) performers. Course content developed in consultation with a Professor of Children’s Literature and the Department of Early Childhood Education at Lakeland Community College.
