Introducing Internebbles: Cleftlands Quarantine Newsletter

Hope that everyone is doing well and taking care of themselves! With events cancelled until at least May, we want to touch base with everyone in the Barony to share information and ideas – and just to stay connected! With that in mind, the first issue of the Cleftlands newsletter is out and ready for you to read. 🙂 There are some news articles you may have seen, some online resources, training tips, craft ideas, and a few other things. Hope you enjoy!

If you have any suggestions for content, please contact me (Claricia) at clariciadlm@gmail.com. If you’d like to write up something, I would love that – we’re just doing some VERY short articles so it’s super easy!!! If you don’t want to write anything, feel free to just send me links to cool websites, videos, training tips, or any other SCA-related ideas.

This will hopefully go out every week, so send something over whenever you think of it!

Thanks and stay well – fingers crossed, we’ll be back to events in no time 🙂

– Lady Claricia

Congratulations Lady Claricia de la Mere, Seneschal!

The Cleftlands would like to welcome Lady Claricia de la Mere as Seneschal! She will step into this role at Northern Oaken War Maneuvers in June 2020.

A special thanks to the outgoing Seneschal Lord Cadfan of Cleftlands for his hard work and service over the years and we wish him well in his upcoming retirement.

SCA Activities Suspended (until May)

Good afternoon everyone,

The Barony of the Cleftlands is, effective immediately, suspending all activities in order to comply with the directive of the Crown and Curia of the Middle Kingdom. There will be no Meetings, Events, or Practices from now through the end of April.

We look forward to seeing you once this temporary hold on our activities comes to an end.

If you have any questions you may email me anytime. I appreciate your understanding.
Below is a message from the Middle Kingdom Seneschal. Please read the message in its entirety.

Thank you,

Cadfan of Cleftlands, APF CDB
Seneschal
Barony of the Cleftlands

Here follows the words of Master Cerridwen, Kingdom Seneschal:

Dear Children of the Dragon,

In these troubled times we seek to do our best to protect and defend.  Sometimes that means making difficult decisions for the health and safety of those that need it most.  Thus on behalf of the Crown and the Great Officers of State, hear and know the following:

• Gulf Wars has been officially cancelled.
• All events (weekend events, business meetings, and practices, etc.) are hereby cancelled, effective immediately through the end of March (updated to April).  We will evaluate the situation at the end of March to determine the next appropriate steps.

Pre-registration of events through PayPal will be disable until further notice.  It is recommended that local branches stop offering a pre-registration option to avoid potential issues with refunds due to cancelled events or requests due to illness.  To help ease the potential impact of these decisions, the Middle Kingdom will be making the following financial policy changes:

For local branches hosting events, the Middle Kingdom will assist local groups who provide site refunds to individuals who request one due to them or a family member being ill.  Such requests would have to occur on or before the event.  Policy to be re-evaluated in 60 days.

Local groups forced to cancel the use of a venue by government, venue, the Board of Directors of SCA, Inc. or by the Middle Kingdom:  If the venue does not offer a full refund of the deposit and the forfeiture of the deposit would result in the group having a balance of less than $500 in their account, the Kingdom will assist to ensure a minimum of $500 remains in the group’s accounts for ordinary operational costs.  Policy to be re-evaluated in 30 days.

It saddens us that we must make such decisions and know they are not made lightly.

For all Armored Combat Marshals, CA Marshals, and CA MITs

This class covers the basics of that you need to know about Combat Archery at an event when you’re marshaling.  All Armored Combat Marshals should know this information, and all CA MITs need to take it for a sign-off.  Topics include paperwork (for events & authorizations), how to run CA auths, and marshaling on the field with CA (and Siege).

Expect to participate in discussion!  CA MITs will get a sign-off for the class only if they demonstrate that they know the information. It will help to review the Authorization and marshal sections of the CA Handbook before the class.  If anything is unclear, please bring it up in class!

The CA Marshal handbook is on the CA Marshal page of the Midrealm website (midrealm.org).  Unfortunately, you have to go through the Documents & Forms link to get to it.  As long as you’re there, please read the document on “How to become a Combat Archery Marshal”,” because it may be different than you think.

As always, it helps me if you can send an email to let me know that you’re planning to attend the class.  My address is combatarchery@midrealm.org, or you can find a link on the Midrealm webpage.  Feel free to email me with questions anytime.   NOTE- This is scheduled as a two-hour class; if participants start on time and stay on task, it may take less time.

A&S: Make Your Own Turnshoes!

Yes, with a little persistence you can make your own period shoes!  Many styles of medieval shoes can be made with relatively simple tools and techniques.  This class will provide an overview of medieval turnshoes, demonstrate basic techniques, and provide resources for learning more.  If I can make shoes, so can you.  Come hear about period footwear, see some examples, and learn from some of my mistakes.

If you want to start making a pattern for your own shoes, bring a plastic bag large enough to put your foot in, a roll of duct tape, a pair of scissors that will cut cardboard, and a permanent marker.
Date: 5-Feb at 7:30 pm in Room 10 at meeting site.
Instructor: Cynwrig ap Llewellyn
Ages: Children are welcome under adult supervision.
