Guilds and Guild Adjacent Activities

Guilds are the special interest groups of the SCA: people working together to focus on a particular activity. Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings.  Please use the new online A&S Activities Tracker on the Midrealm Services Portal to note what you’ve been up to.

  • Armorer’s Guild meets Thursday’s at Ealdred and Clairiel’s home. Please contact Calum at calum@wowway.com for information or directions.
  • Archery Guild practices are over for the season. Thanks to Gwyneth and Muldonney for hosting practices at their home during the warm months. Gywntarian is holding indoor archery practices. Please check the Baronial Facebook page for details or contact Gwyneth.
  • Leatherworks Guild meets Tuesdays at Oliver’s at 7 pm. Please contact Oliver at adifferenttwist@gmail.com or on Oliver Stillman on Facebook for directions and information.
  • Lubeck hosts his Anti-Social (Brewing and every thing else) Meeting 7-10 most Tuesdays. If you’re interested, please contact him as Steve Kerg on Facebook to confirm the meeting. The Meadery in Western Reserve interested in doing classes in mead making; the date is up in the air.
  • Needleworkers Guild normally meets 2 and 4th Tuesdays. Directions will be posted online, or contact Miriana at rrichmo1@kent.edu for details and directions. Let her know if there is interest for the week of Thanksgiving.
  • Dance Guild will lead dances at the November Dessert Revel.

    • If you would like to donate baronial tithes for the whole year, Robert can give you a receipt for your tax purposes.

Events

  • November Dessert Revel: Rapier Tourney
    • There will be wagering again this time. Please wager nonperishable food donations or other donations for a homeless shelter. You can only bet on three squares, but please bring as much as you’d like to donate. Will go to our meeting site (church) or Cleveland Food Bank.
    • Assistant heralds are needed for the lists. This is a good way to get experience as list herald. See Angharad to volunteer.
    • Arrive early if you want to authorize before the tournament. Tournament starts at 7:45 p.m.
  • December Dessert Revel: Yule Celebration is on 18-Nov. Theme is “Solstice, Dark vs. Light.” Come dressed as Darkness or Light. There will be games to see if Sun or Night wins. There will be a table decorating display, food, dancing and gift exchange (something nice from your SCA closet or supplies).
  • Regular Event, 29-Feb (Leap Year Day) :
    • Jacqueline is Event Steward with Clariscia as her Deputy Steward. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact them. The event theme is a “A Perfect Pairing.”
    • Looking for volunteers for many things including classes, Youth Coordinator,  and other areas. Most positions are filled. There will be an A&S challenge. Brute squad help is needed.
    • Katerin is recruiting teachers for the event. Please let her know if you would like to teach.
  • Northern Oaken War Manuevers (NOWM) AS 54/2021
    • Gianna has been Event Steward for the last seven years. If you are interested in shadowing her and learning to take on the role at “the event that runs itself” please let her know, as it’s not too early to get started on planning.

    • The site we are using (the Byzantine Cathedral in Parma) will not be available after 2020. It is NOT too soon to begin looking for a 2021 site and planning the bid.

A&S: How to Fight the Kids

Taught by Kingdom Dean of Youth Rapier. Authorized Fencers! This 20 minute class (and paper work) will have you authorized to fence with Youth fencers. What better way to pass on your fencing prow to a future generation of SCAdians.

November Dessert Revel: Cleftlands Rapier Classic

Their Excellencies Crispin and Gianna, fifth Baron and Baroness of the Cleftlands, cordially invite you to their fall Cleftlands Rapier Classic. This tournament will be held on Wednesday, November 20th, 2019 in Euclid, OH. All authorized rapier combatants are encouraged to participate regardless of rank, station, or location. The tournament will commence around 7:45 PM.

If competing, please arrive early enough to make your intentions known at the list table as well as reporting in to the heralds who will not only announce you and your consort, but help you process into the tourney by Order of Precedence. Non-combatants, please do honor to your worthy champion and dress your best to support their efforts.

Revelers are encouraged to swing by the gallery to enjoy the most noble competitions, bring and enjoy some nibbles, and enter a friendly wager on our squares-style “medieval” grids.This year, we are accepting non-perishable food or personal care items to reserve a square (limit three per person.) When the final 8 are decided, names of those combatants will be put into the squares at random, so you never know who you’re going to get! Cheer on the contestants, and if you get the square that matches the final results, you’ll win the grand prize. Gifts for runners-up will also be awarded.

  • Macro is looking to start a ‘Maker’s Guild’ here in Cleftlands. He’s primarily working out of the Lorain CC Fab Lab, but there are othe rmaker spaces available. This is still a new idea, so contact him on Facebook as Josh McDonald to share your interests.

Medieval Monster Mash

On October 30, the Barony of the Cleftlands gathered together to celebrate Halloween with our own Medieval Monster Mash! The traditional costume contest was inspired by the recent exhibit Medieval Monsters at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Entrants were encouraged to look into the pages and lore in history! The Cooks Guild held their own challenge titled Awesome Offal and those brave enough to cook and sample all things non-traditional. A tasty ghoulish delight!

A basic primer on spoken Japanese to help get into the spirit of the Reign of Seto Heika. We will especially focus on the terms of address for Their Majesties and the other terms likely to be used in courts to help heralds or anyone interested to prepare for upcoming events.

Congratulations Prince Felix and Princess Madeleina!

On Saturday, October 19th in the Barony of Flaming Gryphon their Royal Majesties Seto-Heika and Reina Ynes hosted the 101st Crown Tournament at the Middle Kingdom. Once the dust settled and the blows were counted, the Midrealm crowned the heirs to the Kingdom, Prince Felix the Just of Rams’ey and Princess Madeleina de LaMans. Congratulations to Their Royal Highnesses! Let us rejoice!

  • Please consider submitting a bid for Regular Event in 2021: it is not too early to start planning a bid for that event.
  • The Barony is accepting applications for Rapier Marshal and Minister of Arts and Science positions on on the Cleftlands site through next Wednesday (16-Oct).

Demo Coordinator, Cadfan for Carl

  • The Maker’s Faire is back on, and will be at the Science Center, rather than the Library downtown. They have asked us to appear again. The demo will be 2-Nov: we’re asked to show up between 8 and 9:30 am, as the Faire starts at 10 am. There are some parking spaces in the garage at the Science Center, and there’s on the street parking. It’s also walking distance from a Rapid stop. Attendance should be free for those participating in the demo. Please contact Carl for information.

    • The Costume Challenge is Medieval Monsters, inspired by the show at the Cleveland art museum.
    • The Cooks Challenge theme is Awesome Offal. Bring a dish featuring a non-standard meat cut; heart, tongue, feet, viscera of any type.
  • Bardic Madness, 2-Nov, will be in Rocky River. Further information is available at https://sites.google.com/site/bardicmadnessmid/home
    • Her Majest, Ynes, will be attending.
    • Jolicia is organizing crash space for attendees. If you have a bed, or floor to offer, please let her know.
  • November Dessert Revel: Armored Tourney
  • December Dessert Revel: Yule Celebration.
  • Regular Event, 29-Feb: Bids for 2020 must be submitted by next Wednesday, 16-Oct.
    • Jacqueline is organizing the one known bid. If you’re interested in taking a role in her event bid, please contact her.
    • The site we are using (the Byzantine Cathedral in Parma) will not be available after 2020. It is NOT too soon to begin looking for a 2021 site and planning the bid.
  • Northern Oaken War Manuevers (NOWM).
    • Gianna has been Event Steward for the last seven years. If you are interested in shadowing her and learning to take on the role at “the event that runs itself” please let her know, as it’s not too early to get started on planning.

Congratulations 2019 Baronial Champions!

It was both an honor and privilege to host the twenty-eight annual Standard Bearers Baronial Championship on October 5, 2019 in the northernmost reaches of Euclid in our beloved Cleftlands. We offer thanks to all who attended and to those who participated in the many challenges and activities throughout the day.

Special thanks to those staff members mentioned including, but not limited to: Cadfan of Cleftlands (Steward), Carl of Cleftlands (Gate), Branwen filia Paynell (Breakfast), Claricia de la Mere (Lunch), Angharad Ferch Tangwystl (Feast), Edward Brackenburye (Archery MIC), Thorin Eikskjald (Armored MIC), Brangwayn Snowden (Rapier MIC), and all others who assisted throughout the day or shadowed to learn a new event skill.

Officer Opening – Rapier Marshal

The Barony of the Cleftlands is accepting applications for Rapier Marshal. This position requires current SCA membership. If you would like to be considered for this position, please fill out the application online. The submission will be received by the Baron, Baroness, and Seneschal for review prior to being presented at an Officers meeting for final vote. The deadline for submissions is October 18, 2019. Questions or comments may be directed to my inbox.
