Baronial and Kingdom Recommendations

Unto the populace of the Cleftlands do we, Crispin and Gianna, Baron and Baroness of the Cleftlands, send greetings.

With a Regular Event in the Cleftlands on the horizon this January 27th, we wished to take a moment to encourage reflection on the good works done by members of the society and to encourage writing award recommendations for either baronial or kingdom awards.

The Barony of the Cleftlands has three service-oriented awards to choose from: Saint Alfred, Saint Clairiel, and the Azure Chalice. To submit a recommendation for a baronial award, we encourage you to fill out our new form online, contact us via email, or speak to us in person.

The Middle Kingdom has a veritable cornucopia of awards to choose from. Award recommendations may be submitted by any person for any good gentle online via the Middle Kingdom Order of Precedence. If you do not already have an account, you can create one. Once logged in, to submit a request simply click on New Recommendation. The fields required for a submission are: the award recipient’s name, the award or honor, the event(s) they may be attending in the future, and the reason for your recommendation. While it doesn’t have to be an essay, be thorough in your support.

Here are a few examples from the web interface:

If you would like to check if your intended award recipient has received the honor, you may check the Cleftlands Wiki or the Middle Kingdom Order of Precedence. (We have heard our webminister and the wiki staff regularly cross check the OP and update the Wiki, but no one is perfect. 😉 )

We look forward to hearing from you!

In service,

Baron Crispin and Baroness Gianna

November Dessert Revel: Cleftlands Rapier Classic

https://collections.royalarmouries.org/archive/rac-archive-391002.html

Their Excellencies Crispin and Gianna, fifth Baron and Baroness of the Cleftlands, cordially invite you to their fall Cleftlands Rapier Classic. This tournament will be held on Wednesday, November 29th, 2017 in Euclid, OH. All authorized rapier combatants are encouraged to participate, regardless of rank, station, or location. The tournament will commence around 7:45 PM.

If competing, please arrive early enough to make your intentions known at the list table as well as reporting in to the heralds who will not only announce you and your consort, but help you process into the tourney by Order of Precedence. Non-combatants, please do honor to your worthy champion and dress your best to support their efforts.

Revelers are encouraged to swing by the gallery to get expert commentary, bring and enjoy some nibbles, and enter a friendly wager on our squares-style “medieval” grids. Submit a token or largesse* (no real money or alcohol) to reserve a square. When the final 8 are decided, names of those combatants will be put into the squares at random, so you never know who you’re going to get! Cheer on your contestants, and if you get the square that matches the final results, you’ll win the grand prize. Gifts for runners-up will also be awarded.

* Largesse collected will be added to the Cleftlands gift basket supplies. These supplies will be used for kingdom and/or visiting nobility gift baskets. Thank you!

Cleveland Mini Maker Fair Demo

Cadfan, Constanza, Alda, and Carl vs. the Heavy Metal Dragon at the Cleveland Mini Maker Fair. Photograph by: Gaius Macro Calvinus.

On Saturday, November 4th, fourteen members of the Barony of the Cleftlands participated in the Mini Maker Fair at the Cleveland Public Library. The event showcased the talents of makers from far and wide. Exhibits included life-sized functioning models of Star Wars droids, a Tesla Coil orchestra, and a 30-foot long fire-breathing metal dragon.

The SCA was given a large room where we displayed and demonstrated spinning, weaving, archery equipment, armor, swords, honey, and the process of turning flax into linen. Outside we gave combat demonstrations throughout the day, both armored and rapier. The event organizer stated at the end of the day that attendance was numbered in the thousands.

Thank you to Eve of Cleftlands for organizing our role in the event and thank you to all who gave their time on a Saturday to educate the public about medieval life: Carl of Cleftlands, Cynwrig ap Llywelyn, Eryn Deoradhán, Jolicia atte Northclyfe, Nadyezhda the Simple, Gwyneth Cole, Robin of Cleftlands, Milesent Vibert, Aldermoureis Ventzke, Aurelia Rosetti, Gaius Macro Calvinus, Brendan O Corraidhe, Constanza de Mendoza, and Cadfan of Cleftlands.

Congratulations Mistress Milesent and Archers!

On October 28th, the Marche of Tirnewydd hosted the event Red Dragon at a new site in Marysville, OH. Heeding the call to arms, the archers of the Cleftlands traveled en masse to the south to arch as well as compete in the William Tell shoot. The price of admission to this tourney was a donation of a canned good to benefit the Mid-Ohio Food Bank, and the prize a hand-crafted bow! Two of our archers, Lord Cadfan of Cleftlands and Lord Meinhard Hamemrschmidt were able to shoot the apple with a single arrow, but the contest went to Mistress Milesent Vibbert and her two!

Of special note, the Cleftlands archers mobilized and collected donations to purchase and present a sizable stack of donations for the food bank.

Huzzah!

All Saints Day Revel

On October 25, the Barony of the Cleftlands celebrated the end of month with a gathering themed All Saints Day. Our many members arrived in saintly costumes, cleverly constructed masks, or in garb to revel the night away. The Cook’s Guild sponsored the subtlety challenge of disguised food and the cooks of the Cleftlands rose to the challenge, featuring several delectable and confusing dishes such as cracked eggs of chocolate and custard or the briefly-seen spider cookies! The Baroness’ gourd decorating challenge was met with several entries, from the chubby cheeked Jareth from Labyrinth to a 14th-century themed pumpkin decorated the pumpkin-headed saint.

Several contests for best costume and gourd were held with the following winners:

  • Best Saint – Wrin of Cleftlands for her depiction of Saint Hubertus
  • Populace Choice – Ginevra for her depiction of Saint Milburga
