A&S: Needle Felt Ornaments

Bring you favorite cookie cutter and a towel! Why? Cause we are going to be making ornaments out of fleece! Needle felting is an art that has all kinds of possibilities from decorative work to lifelike animals. We are going to start easy, just enough to get you hooked, cause that is the way I roll. December Dessert Revel: Yule Revel

Their Excellencies Crispin and Gianna, fifth Baron and Baroness of the Cleftlands, cordially invite you to their December Dessert Revel to be held on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 in Euclid, OH. Enjoy a relaxing evening among friends celebrating the end of year festivities! Bring your favorite dessert or festive drink to share, make merriment, and dance the night away. Our theme this year is a Festival of Lights!

  • Since times unrecorded, people around the world have noted and celebrated the winter solstice. It is the time of the longest night, but also when the days start getting longer. Many celebrations have hinged around that dichotomy; the time of rest for fields and people, while they look forward to being ready for the return of warmth. Death and rebirth, dark and light.
  • From the story of the Green Knight, to the Slavs’ Korochun, many tales of winter solstice represent the yearly turning point with a contest. This year, we’ll be doing our own version to see which will win – except through games, not head-chopping!
  • Come dressed to represent either the longest night or the coming longer days – bring out your dark or light garb, get macabre or angelic! Or both?
  • Whichever side you choose will get points when you play the games to see whether night or day is stronger.
  • Table centerpieces can go all dark, or all light, or a balance of the two.
  • Gift exchange: Pick an item in good repair from your SCA closet, or craft something for the occasion. Maybe it’s a kit you bought for a craft you don’t practice, a piece of garb from an old persona, or that really cool embroidered bag you just made – whatever you’d like to see go to a good home. Everyone can participate, and gifts will be chosen randomly (and can be exchanged after opening). You never know what you might get!
Thanks everyone and hope to see you at Yule Revel!!

Congratulations Sir Silverthorn, Rapier Champion!

Tournament prize created by the hands of Baron Crispin al-Rumi and Baroness Gianna Vettori in a 14th century style.

On Wednesday, November 20th, the Cleftlands lists were opened up to all rapier combatants to test their mettle in the annual tournament. Numerous inspired combatants stepped forth and took to the lists. When the flurry of steel, sweat, and distribution of carnations slowed and the last blows were counted, one rapier combatant emerged victorious.

Congratulations to the Sir Silverthorn of Drachenmoor, inspired by Mistress Chai’usun of the Moritu, for winning the tournament and the tourney prize of a 14th century painted box and a set of ceramic cups with a pitcher.

In addition, the gallery chose to honor Lord Cynwrig ap Llywelyn with a brass bracelet from Raymond’s Quiet Press for expediently and graciously volunteering time and again to marshal when he was not actively fighting.

Finally, to those combatants who chose to newly authorize or renew/expand previous authorizations: Baron Stephan, Forester Gwyneth, Sergeant Njall, Lady Jaquelinne, Lord Darkstone, and Nzinga.

Huzzah!

In addition to the rapier festivities, Lady Claricia de la Mere sponsored a friendly wagers table. Congratulations to Forester Gwyneth Cole and Lady Yashoda D’Albuquerque who won prizes after having their names drawn from the proverbial (fuzzy) hat after a small hiccup at the wagers table. All donations received were then donated to the local food pantry of Euclid.

Special thanks to our marshals: Lady Ragna stórráða Úlfsdóttir, Lord Labros of Vito’s Minions, and Lord Cynwrig ap Llywelyn; at the list table: Mistress Zuriel Nightshade and Baroness Birna Gunnlaugsdóttir with assistance from Sir Thorin Eikskjald and Captain Sirius; and to our many heralds throughout the night under the direction of Baroness Angharad ferch Tangwystl.

The list included:

Medieval Monster Mash

On October 30, the Barony of the Cleftlands gathered together to celebrate Halloween with our own Medieval Monster Mash! The traditional costume contest was inspired by the recent exhibit Medieval Monsters at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Entrants were encouraged to look into the pages and lore in history! The Cooks Guild held their own challenge titled Awesome Offal and those brave enough to cook and sample all things non-traditional. A tasty ghoulish delight!

Many thanks to all who contributed and attended!
