In this is a hands on class, Forester James will teach a second method of bookbinding. This class has a limit of 5 people actively making a book. If you plan on coming please let us know in the comments. Those posting past the 5 will be put on a waiting list in case some one does not make it to meeting. All are welcome to audit the class.

Demos

  • Eve thanked everyone who participated in the demo at Lakewood’s Beck Center for the Arts last Thursday. They so enjoyed our demo, they are planning to ask them back.
  • We’ll be doing a demo at the East 200th Street Stroll, scheduled for 2-June. Eve’s looking for combatants and A&S activities for the demo.

Events

  • Better War through Archery is next weekend (31-Mar) in Danville, Indiana. If you are interested in participating in a carpool to the event, please contact Cadfan who is organizing one.
  • The Falcon’s Quarry Championships are being held this Sunday at 12:30 at 41909 N Ridge Rd, Elyria, OH 44035. Rapier and Armored champions will be chosen. There will also be A&S activities, and a potluck meal
  • Cleftlands Craftspersons Fair: 28-Mar.

Ginevra is organizing a party to go to Terpsichore at the Tower, a event for dancing of all types held in Michigan (Barony of Cynnabar) on 21-April. This is a great opportunity to get a chance to dance, as you often can’t at meetings due to the overlap with fighting or other activities. The March Dessert Revel (28-Mar) will be a mini Cleftlands A&S Craftsperson’s Faire. Please bring your ‘arting’ and share it with others. In addition, Runa has scheduled classes on Judging A&S; Documentation for A&S, and Staging your A&S Entry. This would be an excellent time to take your regional entry and brush it up before Kingdom. Due to the two weeks without meetings, there will be fighting at the Dessert Revel, downstairs.

At Clancy Day, Aethelwyn won the novice tourney, while the William Wallace tourney was won by Yaramir.

At Shillelaghs and Shenanigans: the A&S Tourney was won by Fedosia. Vasili and Geoffrey authorized as armored combatants, while Cadfan authorized with Great Weapon, and Muldonney and Sidius authorized with 2-handed weapons. Gwyneth Cole authorized in rapier combat. Winthegn won the two weapon tourney, while the team of Thorin, Muldonney, and Geoffrey won the Lava tourney.

Weekly Meeting Cancellation (March 14)

We have received word from our weekly meeting site that the building is still having repairs done and will therefore be closed again this Wednesday, March 14. This will be the last week that we are affected, as I have been assured that the site will be ready for us next Wednesday, March 21. Thank you for your continuing patience. The Needleworkers Guild Fabric Swap event that was to take place this Wednesday will instead occur next Wednesday.

March Dessert Revel: Craftspersons Faire

Their Excellencies Cleftlands cordially invite you to the March Craftspersons Faire and Dessert Revel to be held on Wednesday, March 28th 2018 in Euclid, OH. Join the Barony of the Cleftlands in enjoying and sharing the arts. Display your crafted items with or without documentation in a Craftpersons Faire environment. It’s a perfect time to dust off past, present, or think about future A&S Faire entries. Duchess Runa has arranged for three faire related classes, including: Documentation with Mistress Milesent and Baron Edward, Presentation with Mistress Zuriel, and Judging with Master Alen. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to explore the “faire” waters for next year!

Addendum: In response to the recent building closures, we invite the combatants to practice the arts de combat as normal downstairs while the Craftspersons Faire activities, dancing, and general reveling takes place upstairs.

Gaming Revel

On February 28, the Barony of the Cleftlands gathered together to game! Our many members arrived, games in tow, for a night of gaming, dancing, and eating. The Cook’s Guild sponsored a Combat Cooking challenge with many delicious entries in addition to the standard dessert revel fare. Lady Eve’s Dances from the East Kingdom were well received by old and new dancers alike! Upstairs, Duke Eikbrandr and his apprentice Torstenn taught a class on how to make brass buckles. Special thanks to Lady Claricia for orchestrating this revel, the teachers for teaching, and the populace for attending and enjoying a relaxing and entertaining revel.

Gianna and Crispin thanks the 20 or more Cleftlanders who participated in the regional Arts and Sciences Faire this last weekend. Zuriel took first place in the Pentathalon, while Jolicia took two firsts in performance.

Tariq has stepped down as Baronial Iron Key after 6 years of service. Carl is taking on the role.

Dmitri has stepped down after uncounted years of service as Baronial Pursuivant, and the role is being taken by his long-time deputy, Ginevra.

Be aware St. Johns, which we’ve used for the past couple of years is now for sale: the site liaison says he won’t know if it will still be available in January until after July this year.

The Barony is also looking for people interested learning to work as event staff. We hold two large events every year, and expanding the pool of people who know how they work will make it possible to keep holding these events in the future.

If you are interested in making annual tithe towards our meeting site, please contribute $45: a dollar for every meeting we hold. Currently, the tithes do not quite cover the cost of renting the site.

  • The Barony is looking for additional Youth Combat Marshals, as well as fighters authorized to fight the children, to help train our up and coming combatants. Our Youth Rapier program, especially, is exceeding the capacity of our existing Marshal. If you, as an authorized combatant, are at all interested, please explore the opportunities with Farthegn (for armored combat), or Velvet (for rapier combat).
  • The Society Seneschal reminds us that, as a Society, our ideals are honor, respect, and chivalry. This is not supported by ‘doxxing’ people by posting their personal information on the internet, for whatever reason. Doxxing is actually illegal in some states, including CA. Please do not do this.
  • The Baronial Trim is in, and being sold for $2/yard. About half of the order has been sold. Please see Cadfan to purchase.

The Guild will be hosting a Fabric swap at meeting on 14-Mar, for the fabric you have no ideas for.

A&S: Book Binding

A lecture about types of bookbinding in period and give information about the materials needed and process being used in the class next week

A&S: Wire Temple Rings II

Learn to make a type of jewelry worn by medieval Rus and Slav women. Students will leave class with at least one pair of temple rings.There will be kits for $5 for at least 10 students. Auditors welcome. Students who have their own wire cutters and round nose pliers are encouraged to bring them.

Youth must be able to use sharp wire cutters without supervision.
