Other Announcements

  • Colette invites everyone to participate in a “Warm your heart” gift exchange at February’s dessert revel. Entered items will be displayed from 7pm-9:15pm. I invite all to make something to warm a person’s heart. It can be anything you might think someone else would enjoy. A hat, a scissor case, soap, a candle. It doesn’t have to be anything expensive. Bring an entry and put your name in the hat. During court the names will be picked and when your name is called, you will get to choose an entry to take home. If you have any questions, please contact Colette.

Barons

  • Staring in February, the Knights of Cleftlands will be teaching brief classes at meeting starting at 7 pm each week. Next week, Silverthorne will teach.
  • Rapier combatants are invited to compete in the next Rapier Tourney at the last meeting in February will be the next Cleftlands Rapier Tourney.
  • The Barons have issued an A&S challenge: do something NEW to you, and present it at the March Dessert Revel. As always, documentation is admired but not required.
  • The Candlemas event is looking for people to teach classes.
  • The travel challenge is still in effect: counting miles traveled to and from SCA events between the last NOWM and the upcoming January Event. Travel lots to raise your miles.
  • Alen and Constanza will be teaching a class on ‘Courtly Comportment’ at January Dessert Revel.

Events

  • There are still two staff positions to fill: Breakfast Tavern Coordinator and Merchant Coordinator.
  • There will be a raffle for those who volunteer at the event. Please donate prizes for the Volunteer rafflle.
  • Still looking for prizes for the Rapier Tourneys.
  • At the Armored Tourney, being organized by James Layne, each entrant will bring a prize ‘appropriate to his rank’ starting around $20 value. At the end, the victor of the tourney will have first choice among the prizes, and so down the line. Everyone who fights will take a prize home.

  • The Regional Rapier Marshal will be here next week to lead a class in Cut and Thrust. Auric has extra helmets available for those who want to try it.
  • Arts and science reports are due next week. Please send a report of your activity for the last quarter to MOAS@cleftlands.org, or post it on Facebook.
  • Velvet is now an authorized Youth Rapier Marshall. He’ll be leading classes and training at meeting from 7-7:30 each week. Children between 8 and 14 years may participate—please contact him if you know someone who may be interested.

  • The Kingdom Seneschal has written a letter indicating that the guidelines that no events should be scheduled on the same day within 100-mile of each other will be more strictly enforced in the future. In fact, the Seneschal is considering expanding the rule to allow only one event per weekend in a region.  Please consider this when proposing events.
  • We are in the final few weeks of the Baron’s Travel Challenge: how many miles traveled since NOWM and before the Regular Event. Please keep track.
  • This weekend there are two equidistant kingdom events: Pentamere 12th Night and Flaming Gryphon Spirit of 12th Night. Check the Midrealm Calendar for details at www.midrealm.org/calendar.
  • The Barons have issued an A&S challenge: to try something you have never done before and present it at the March Dessert Revel. Documentation is encouraged but not required. Check with them at meeting if you need more information.

Populace_FarthegnThe Cleftlands would like to welcome Ser Farthegn Rinksson as the new Youth Marshal. Ser Farthegn has been a member of the Cleftlands for many years and has served the Barony and the Kingdom on many fronts, both in battle and in skill.

A special thanks to the outgoing Youth Marshal, his Majesty, King Nikolai Grigorevich Petrov for his hard work and service over the last two years.

  • Cook’s Guild hosted a Cooking Challenge on the theme of Aspic: Cynwrig submitted a Gely of chicken (two bottles of white wine, a pigs foot and a chicken), Claricia brought a ‘mock aspic’ of mulled cider and faux eggs, and Thomasina brought ‘dirt jelly’ of coke and sprite with gummy worms. The Guild will meet next week to discuss ‘The Big Project’.
  • The Needleworker’s has been gifted with MUCH embroidery floss which will be available for acquisition at any future guild meetings at Madelaine’s house. Ephraim begs you to take more, soon.

  • At Crown Tourney, several Cleftlanders received awards: Tariq was made Queen’s champion. Gwen received the White Chamfron. Chisato his Silver Oak. Elizabeth Alles was elevated to the Order of the Pelican. Milesent and Sorcha were scribes for the event. Nickolai and Serena were presented with their new heirs, Cameron and Amalie.
  • Next week is the Brendoken newcomers’ event DragonQuest, being held about 1.5 hours to the south of Cleveland. We’ve had a lot of new people in the last month – this would be an excellent event to learn more about the SCA.
  • The Baronial Travel Challenge is still outstanding. Prizes for everyone who travels more than 1500 miles to SCA events between NOWM (last June) and the January event (Being held late this upcoming February to allow you extra time to pile on the miles), and for the person who has the farthest overall.

  • The Barony has accepted a bid for the Regular Event from Sabine, to be held on 27-Feb-50 (AS).
  • The November Dessert Revel will be Nov 18, the week before Thanksgiving. There will be no meeting the week of Thanksgiving.
  • The December Dessert Revel will be Dec 16. There will be no meeting the weeks of Christmas and New Years.

  • Edward announced the final financial results of Coronation. 419 attendees generated an income of $1,067, which is split 50/50 with the Kingdom. Bob is still selling leftover pop from the lunch tavern, so the final numbers may still change.

  • At Coronation, three Cleftlands authorized as armored combatants: Eli, Nazar, and Rolo.
  • At the Rapier Tourney at Dessert Revel last month, two of Vito’s Minions authorized as rapier combatants and earned their names: Labros and Lupa. Labros was the gallery’s choice at the tourney.
  • At Crown Tourney this weekend, there will be 14 combatants, five from Cleftlands. Kjartan is fighting for Ísgerðr Gulkárr (better known to many as Bucket), Silverthorne fighting for Chai, Edward fighting for Milesent, Ajax fighting for Zsof, Windthegn for Neassa.
  • Elizabeth will be sitting vigil at Crown Tourney this weekend: please come and share your advice with her.
  • Alda will be hosting another McGyver competition.
  • Thorin shared the great feat he saw at Red Dragon this weekend. The team of Echtheo, James, and Thomas took on a Dragon. Thomas chopped off the dragon’s tail (King Nikolai), James took the dragon’s head (Duke Edmund). Then Echtheo, having lost the rest of his team, tore into the dragon’s body (four knights), finally skewering the heart of the dragon (Sir Ceallach).

Baron & Baroness

  • The Baron’s honored Labros, a combatant who authorized at meeting, was persuaded to join the tourney, and then went to the semi-finals.
  • The Gallery chose Velvet as their, as the gallery’s choice for his grace on the field.
  • The victor of the Tourney was Don Trapon. Due to the press of travel, he believes himself unable to fulfill the responsibilities of the sword. Therefore, he passed the sword to his competitor in the final round, Edward FitzRanulf.
  • Due to the press of time, no formal meeting was held. Thanks for Coronation will be shared next week.

  • Next Wednesday is Dessert Revel, and the next Cleftlands Rapier Tourney. Nikolai (aka ‘some Russian dude’) could potentially be the first person to successfully defend his possession of the Cleftlands sword, unless he is successfully opposed.
  • Baronial Court:
  • Artair was invited up to present his thanks to all those people who made the Mapleside Demo successful. He asks everyone to share with him ideas to make future demos there more fun for ourselves or for the attendees.
  • Colette and Gwen presented to the Barony, in honor of once again being the home of the Midrealm Royalty, seven banners of previous Cleftlands royalty, done in the style of the Codex Manesse. The eight for Emrys will be presented later. Those who worked on the banners are Milesent and Edward, James and Gwen, Rannvieg and Eskill, Sorcha, Elizabetta and Thomas, and Colette and Farthegn. The banners even come with stands!

  • Nikolai and Serena both presented their thanks for all the work going into Coronation. They may be too confused and distracted on Saturday, so they wanted to present their thanks now.

  • Mapleside Demo is this weekend. Set up will begin Friday at 5:30. If you’re bringing a lot of supplies, please be on site Saturday or Sunday before 9. If you’re coming south on Pearl, you can turn directly into the parking lot and park behind the restaurant. If you’re coming the other way, you need to pass the site and drive back.

  • Meinhard is handling parking for Coronation and could use assistance.

  • There’s still a travel challenge with prizes for those who travel 1500 miles between NOWM and January event, and the one who travels the most. It’s looking like 3/4 of the attendees will be registering at the door, she she is in dire need of assistance. Even a single hour of work would be very helpful.
    • Retainers are needed for the royalty, along with guards and food for the royalty room. We will be not only the entire MidRealm royal family, but also their Majesties of Trimaris in attendance.
    • Claricia could still use baked goods for breakfast, and help with cookies for lunch.

  • At Pounce, Niessa (Casey) received her Award of Arms. Brice was inducted into the Red Company, and Portia received her Doe’s Grace for service to her majesty. Aldemoureis was one of the scribes for the event.
  • September Dessert Revel (9/30) will also be the next Cleftlands Rapier Tourney, with the newly crowned King Nikolai defending his possession of the Cleftlands sword. Please bring yourself, your inspiration, and all your panoply.

HRH Nikolai

  • Prince Nikolai invited all rapier fighters to contest his possession of the Cleftlands sword: he has no particular desire to release it.
  • He presented his and his lady’s thanks to the Barony of stepping up to present his Coronation: they are overwhelmed by the pace of activities and are grateful for all the effort and that they need not be concerned with Coronation going well.

  • September Dessert Revel (9/30) will be the next Rapier Tourney.
  • Lord Brendoken has kindly offered locations on his lands for the Cleftlands January 2016 event.
  • He also pleaded with the Barons Cleftlands for support in defending his lands (and bacon) from the depredations of Duke Edmund of Lozengia in the Battle of the Five Armies at Harvest Days on 9/12. Our Barons could not battle Lozengia, as Constanza owes a personal debt to Lozengia for setting her on the martial path. Nonetheless, from their great love of Brendoken, they have charged their Standard Bearer, Matheus, to lead the Cleftlands combatants in supporting Brendoken at this great battle.

  • The Barony is still seeking a bid for the 2016 January Event. A bid will be need to be submitted by Coronation.

Demos

  • The Third Annual Mapleside Demo will be Sept 19 and 20. Set up will start Friday 18 at 6 pm. This is a ‘all hands, all activities” demo requiring A&S displays and presentations, fighting of all types, dancing, singing and all other activities. He has flyers available to share. The Mapleside Fair expects 5-6 thousand people to attend this weekend, so there’s a lot of publicity to be had.
  • Jolicia would like to remind people that we may have first timers the next couple of meetings so please plan to bring activities and such to share.

Events

  • Coronation is the following Saturday, 9/26.
  • There will be a Coronation Staff meeting next Wed, 8/26 at 8 pm.
  • Coronation Troll is now open. Madelaine will be taking pre-registration at every meeting until Coronation. She is also looking for volunteers as there will be two troll sites, one in each building, that need to be staffed all day.
  • Paet is looking for loaned fabric to be used in decorating the Coronation hall. Please contact her at paetsart1946@att.net if you have fabric that she could use.

  • Unofficial rapier practice is still in hiatus until after Labor Day.

  • Armorer’s will be held tomorrow at Clariel and Ealdred’s home. The garage is a bit crammed due to a recent acquisition of furniture so you may be asked to help excavate work space.
  • Needleworkers will not meet this upcoming Tuesday. However, next Wednesday, please bring your handouts or class notes from Pennsic Fiber Arts and Sewing classes to share at a Needleworker’s Round Table. Next month, we’ll move back to the two meetings a month schedule.

  • The Barons are hosting the Travel Challenge for mileage to and from events between NOWM and January event, including all trips to Pennsic and any flying miles. There will be prizes for those traveling over 1,500 miles and for the person traveling the ‘mostest.’
  • The Pennsic game this year is again “Steal the Nebble” but this year, every camp will have their own nebble, and the victor is the camp with the most at Pennsic’s end. Please contact Constanza about getting your own nebble: they will be distributed at Pennsic. You can decorate yours with your own camp’s arms if you choose. Baronial Musters (at Three Bears Encampment in N17)
  • Baronial Musters – Unit pictures will be taken after each of these battles, or before the Archery March.
    • 8/7 – Armored Combatants at 9 am before the Field Battle.
    • 8/3 – Rapier Combatants at noon Monday before the Manor Battle.
    • 8/8 – Archers at 2:30 pm on Wednesday before the Populace War Point. Pennsic sources differ on whether there is actually a 3 pm Populace war shoot on Wednesday, so please watch Cleftlist and Facebook for changes.
    • Opening Ceremonies is Sunday at 9 am. Champions should and others may join the Barons at Midrealm to process to the Ceremonies. Muster at 8 am outside Midrealm Royal.
  • Please help set up the Baronial Tent noon of Tue, Peace Week. With enough people, it will go up easily. The Baronial Tent will be taken down one hour after the rapier Field Battle (last war point) on Friday of War week.
