Baronial Trim Survey

The custom 1.5″ nebuly trim from Calontir Trim.

As discussed on Wednesday evening, a request for funding was submitted to the baronial officers outlining a purchase of baronial nebuly-themed trim arranged through Calontir Trim. The minimum custom order is 500 meters for a rough total cost of $900. It is our intent to offer the trim locally to barony members for $2.00 per yard which covers the initial investment cost. As the request is greater than $500, the funding request must be presented to the populace.

Announcements

  • Sir Artair is looking for someone to fill his shoes or at least take over this position to interact with the public and meet more people in the group. Go to http://www.cleftlands.org/officer-application/ and let them know that you are interested.
  • Baroness Colette is stepping down as Minister of A&S. If this appeals to you, go to http://www.cleftlands.org/officer-application/ and show your interest. Applications accepted for the next two weeks starting on 7 September.

Demos

  • Mapleside: Setup starts Friday, the 15th at 5PM. Meinhard is bringing the tents. Many tents need to be set up for all the planned activities. Saturday and Sunday – arrive before 10am to drop off your stuff at our area at the bottom of the hill then park. If you arrive after 10am, you have to park with the rest of the masses. Someone will be the contact point for getting the wrist bands at the top of the hill. Saturday goes to about 6; Sunday until about 5. See Facebook for more details.

  • Meinhard on Standard Bearer’s event: Thanks to those whom helped with specific names for specific jobs. One source of help that was unexpected: Ysenda whom just kept doing more and more.
  • Robert – Turn in receipts. He will not be present at the next meeting so you get an extra week. You can scan and email him the receipts.

  • Archery Guild meets (now) on Sunday at the home of Gwyneth and Muldonney, starting around 11 AM until 2:00 PM. They have a great deal of loaner equipment, including Combat Archery arrows, so if you’re at all interested in either target or combat archery please come.   • Armorer’s Guild (and the less official Booze and Schmooze) meets at Ealdred and Clairiel’s home this Thursday, 7-10 pm. Please contact Calum at calum@att.net for information or directions. The guild will NOT be meeting on September 14 or September 21.

Congratulations 2017 Baronial Champions!

It was an honor and a privilege to host the twenty-sixth annual Standard Bearers on September 2, 2017 in the western borough of Parma in our beloved Cleftlands. We give great thanks to all gentles in attendance and to those who participated in our challenge A Heroic Age in the Cleftlands. We were regaled with many tales and effigies from the ages past, the nearly past, and given a glimpse at heroic deeds yet to come.

Special thanks to the following staff members in no particular order (that strangely resembles the event staff list) – Meinhard Hammerschmidt (Steward), Ginevra Boscoli (Gate/Signet), Oliver Stillman (A&S Coordinator), Thorin Eikskjald (Armored MIC), Ladislas Vulcu and Jao Veludo Alfonso d’Albuquerque (Rapier MIC), Edward Brackenburye and Milesent Vibbert (Archery MIC), Jolicia atte Northclyfe (Breakfast), Claricia de la Mere (Lunch), Angharad ferch Tangwystl (Feast), collectively the Cleftlands Cooks Guild (Lunch and Feast), and all the others who assisted throughout the day whether marshaling, serving, or lending a hand where needed. It as also our honor to be able to preside over regency court for their majesties King William and Queen Isolde where three individuals were recognized at the Kingdom level. At our baronial court a new award was created, the Order of the Azure Chalice, which recognizes individuals who have provided exemplary and long-standing service and dedication to the Barony, and who have done such work as to add to the enduring legacy of the Cleftlands. In the combined courts, the following awards were presented:

  • Standard-Bearer’s will be 2-Sep at St John’s Byzantine Cathedral in Parma. Meinhard is the Event Steward. For detailed information, check the website http://standardbearers.cleftlands.org/.
    • Jolicia is organizing breakfast for Standard Bearer’s. If you can bring a donation of baked goods for breakfast please bring it next week’s meeting or Friday at setup so Jolicia can have it ready for the event.
    • Setup on Friday will start at 7 pm.
    • Site is open to staff and to set up at 8 am on Saturday: Troll opens at 9.
    • Please bring your receipts to Standard Bearers so the exchequer can reimburse you promptly.

Standard Bearers Championship Guidelines

On this day do we, Baron Crispin and Baroness Gianna, fifth to hold the Barony of Cleftlands in fief from the Crown of the Middle Kingdom, send greetings. Know that it is our pleasure to invite all who read these words our Standard Bearers Tournament to be held on Saturday, September 2 at St. John’s Byzantine Church in Parma, OH from 9:00 AM until 9:00 PM.

The championship guidelines for all good gentles who wish to compete to serve as the Barony’s champion is ‘A Heroic Age in the Cleftlands‘. What does that mean, you ask? A heroic age is defined as the period at which semi-divine and human heroes are supposed to have lived. Therefore each competitor is encouraged to share a tangible or intangible, epic or modest, deed achieved or inspired by a member of the Cleftlands. If you seek a muse, entreat a fellow Cleftlander for insight.

Examples:

  • A tale of heroism on the field  (The skaldic saga of Lord Snow’s battle at Hardhome.)
  • An embroidered pouch  (A Codex Manesse inspired pouch with adorned broccoli.)
  • A small reliquary or paternoster (The ave beads are flamingos and the gauds are coffee cups.)

  • At Pennsic, the Midrealm is allied with the East. Therefore, the baronial tent will be set up on the WEST side of the battlefield, rather than the east, as is usual.

  • The last Baronial Meeting before Pennsic is 19-Jul, next week.. The first one after Pennsic is 23-Aug. We will not meet 26-Jul through 16-Aug, due to Pennsic packing, Pennsic, and Pennsic clean-up.
  • We currently pay a bit over $400 a month to use our meeting site, a number that is going to rise. Paying for the site is primarily covered by weekly donations and annual tithes, as well as a small part of event profits.

Events

  • NOWM had a total attendance of 743, more than any previous NOWM. After all expenses were paid, NOWM realized a profit of $3,717.03.
  • Pennsic Battlefield Hospitality is looking for volunteers to help keep our fighters on the field. Please signup to ensure we know we have enough people coming at http://signup.com/go/vJnDvvM.
  • Standard-Bearer’s will be 2-Sep. Meinhard is the Event Steward. If you are interesting in helping out please get in touch with him to volunteer.

Zuriel won the Edible A&S competition with her Raspberry Cordial, while Dasani won the non-edible competition for the enameled reliquary.

A&S: Let’s Do Lunch-A How-To & Taste Testing

Running a lunch tavern can be a fun way to help out at an event – after all, everyone loves food! This class is aimed at guiding people through the process of preparing for and running lunch at an SCA event. If you’re thinking about doing lunch for an event, or running an event where there will be a lunch, have stories of lunches you’ve done, or just like talking about food, stop by! And since part of planning any meal is testing the recipes, you can also help the cooks by giving your opinion on a trial run of dumplings for this year’s Standard Bearer’s. Lend your palate to the cause! There will be food at the class so any with allergies should be cautious.

Not for children.

Pennsic War Meeting Schedule

As the horns of war sound to to the east of our verdant lands, the Cleftlands shall answer in force!

While we gird ourselves and prepare for the Pennsic War, the following summer meeting schedule will be observed:

  • August 2 – NO MEETING
  • August 9 – NO MEETING
  • August 16 – NO MEETING
  • August 23 – Meeting

Seneschal

  • The next Forum is being prepared for June. If you have ideas for or offerings for the quarterly newsletter, please contact Milesent at grace@case.edu.
  • Please review your Cleftlands wiki entry at http://wiki.cleftlands.org/Category:Populace and update at http://cleftlands.org/cleftlands-wiki/populace-update/ if there is new or changed information.
  • The next Eastwatch meeting is Monday, 26-Jun at Lake Erie College. They have a shady location with room for armored, rapier, and combat archery practice. Check the Eastwatch website: http://eastwatch.org/ for details.

Events

  • NOWM was last weekend!
    • Many thanks to all event staff. This was the largest ever NOWM with 740 paid attendees. Many thanks were given to the event stewards and all staff members.
    • If you still have receipt to submit for reimbursement, contact Dorothea by next meeting. No reimbursements will be made after next week’s meeting.
  • Pennsic is 43 days away. Pennsic pre-registration closes in 3 days. If you don’t pre-register, the group you are camping with will have no land to fit your tent. Please pre-register if you are going to Pennsic.
  • Standard-Bearer’s will be 2-Sep. Meinhard is the Event Steward. If you are interesting in helping out please get in touch with him to volunteer. He is especially looking for a rapier marshal.

Demos

  • 16-17 Sept is the Mapleside Demo. Please plan on coming..
  • Sir Artair is planning to step down as Demo Coordinator in the next three to four months. Please contact him if you’d like to know more about the position.

Officers

If an armored combatant is injured on the practice field, please make sure to tell Thorin (Knight’s Marshall) about the injury. He needs to know about this for his reporting and tracking.

Guilds

Guilds are the special interest groups of the SCA: people working together to focus on a particular activity. Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings.

  • Armorer’s Guild (and the less official Booze and Schmooze) meets at Ealdred and Clairiel’s home this Thursday, 7-10 pm . Please contact Calum at calum@att.net for information or directions.
  • Unofficial Fencing Practice does meet again this upcoming Sunday. For info on when and where, please contact Cynwrig for details atjimpretz@sbcglobal.net.
  • Archery Guild meets Tuesdays at the home of Gwyneth and Muldonney, starting around 6 pm, and running into twilight. They have a great deal of loaner equipment, including Combat Archery arrows, so if you’re at all interested in either target or combat archery please come. With sufficient bribes, live Combat Archery targets may be provided. Contact Muldonney for details on effective bribes.
  • Leatherwork’s Guild will meet at Oliver’s at 7 pm on Tuesday for an Open Bench, working on period pouches. Please contact Oliver at adifferenttwist@gmail.com or on Oliver Stillman on Facebook for directions and information.
  • Woodworkers Guild meets this Thursday, 7-10 pm at Meinhard’s home. Please contact Meinhard at Meinhard.hammerschmidt@gmail.com for directions or with questions. You can also check the Cleftlands Woodworkers Facebook page.
  • Needleworkers will meet on 27 June at Constanza home in Cleveland Heights. Directions and details will be posted electronically closer to the date. If you have any questions about Needleworkers, please contact Madelaine at lymadelaine@sbcglobal.net

Other Announcements

  • Claricia, Dorothea, and Angharad are organizing Cleftlands Battlefield Hospitality at Pennsic. If you can help keep your fellow Cleftlanders from keeling over in the heat, please come and help. You can let us know which battles you may be able to help with at http://signup.com/go/vJnDvvM.
  • I Verdi Confusi is performing two shows at Pennsic, and is looking for new players to join them. Please contact any of the I Verdi Confusi members if you’re interested.
  • Assuming we are fighting outdoors next week, Eikbrandr will lead a class on ‘How to Fall Safely in Armor.’

Baron and Baroness

  • Gianna and Crispin both thanked everyone for a successful and smoothly run NOWM.
  • The Rivenvale Medieval Fair demo this Saturday. If you can help out, please participate.
  • Red Spears is hosting Baron Wars on 24-Jun, which is at a new site. They are hosting their Baronial Investiture, as well as a silent auction to raise funds for a Midrealm Royal cooking trailer for Pennsic.

Regency Court

  • Rayner received his Award of Arms.
  • Sir Ulfr was brought into the Order of the Willow.
