November Dessert Revel: Cleftlands Rapier Classic and Dessert Revel

Their Excellencies Pietro and Aurelia, sixth Barone and Baronessa of the Cleftlands, cordially invite you to their fall Cleftlands Rapier Classic and Dessert Revel. This tournament and revel will be held on Wednesday, November 30th, 2022 in Euclid, OH. All authorized rapier combatants are encouraged to participate regardless of rank, station, or location. The tournament will commence around 7:30 PM.

As with tournaments past, an inspiration to fight for is required. If you do not have one, on can or will be found for you. All fighting styles are permitted in this double elimination tournament with adjustments made based on turnout. Initial authorizations and re-authorizations will be offered if you arrive by 6:45.

If competing, combatants have been requested to sign up via Google Forms online (https://forms.gle/gQ1b94V69AeXnTE27 or click the icon to the right) to expedite the check in process.

Revelers are encouraged to bring non-SCA friends and family so they may experience the prowess and pageantry of the tournament.

DESSERT REVELS

Nov. 30: Baronial Fencing Tournament. Each combatant will need a person to be their inspiration. See rapier marshal Lord Reinhardt mit dem Bart for details.

Dec. 14: Yule Revel. Activities include: dancing, caroling (music will be supplied to anyone wishing to sing some seasonal tunes) and treats to share. Bring site tokens to decorate a Yule tree.

“Cookie” Exchange: Like a cookie exchange, bring one or more entries, equivalent in effort and/or expense to a dozen cookies (around $5). For every entry you bring, you take one entry home. So, if you bring a dozen felt sewing kits, you could take home a dozen items from other people. Entries could include: A dozen cookies (because cookies are always good). A small fruitcake. A pair of beeswax candles. A stamped draw string bag. A linen napkin. Or anything else you can think of that people may appreciate. Items should arrive by 7 p.m. to be set up in the viewing area. We’ll start the selection of items to take home around 8:30.

(Note: We don’t expect every person to do every activity. It’s fine to just socialize!)

BARON AND BARONESS: Master Milesent Vibert has issued a Marathon of Illumination challenge to Sergeant Tariq al Sanna Af Fjall. He must complete one illumination in the style of the Codex Manesse for each of the baronies of the Middle Kingdom. He has two weeks to complete each illumination.

Congratulations Prince Louis and Princess Sadb!

On Saturday, October 15th in the Barony of Brendoken their Royal Majesties King Dag and Queen AnneMarie,  hosted the 105th Crown Tournament at the Middle Kingdom. Once the skies cleared and the blows were counted, the Midrealm rejoiced in the knowledge that the heirs to the throne had been revealed. We are pleased to welcome Prince Louis LeCoffrier and Princess Sadb ingen Donnchada. Congratulations to Their Royal Highnesses!

Officer Opening – Seneschal

The Barony of the Cleftlands is accepting applications for Seneschal. If you would like to be considered for a position, please fill out the application online. The submissions will be reviewed at an officers meeting with a final decision made by the Seneschal, Baron, and Baroness. The deadline for applications is October 31, 2022, and the tenure will begin on January 1, 2023.

Job Description

The seneschal is the legal and administrative representative of the Barony, the equivalent of a president. They are responsible for communicating and enforcing laws and regulations to make sure everyone in their group is in compliance, as well as heading the administrative concerns of the Barony. This position works closely with the Baron and Baroness (coronets) in all matters to determine policy. The seneschal is the only one who can sign contracts for the Barony, and is one member of the financial committee to vote on expenses. The seneschal will review event bids and prepare them for review by the Baronial officers, will act as a deputy event steward to all events, is responsible for any sites contracted by the Barony, runs business meetings for the populace and the officers, supports the officer corps, and generally keeps things ship-shape.

Qualifications

  • Paid member of the SCA (required)
  • Age 18 or above (required)
  • The ability to be at every Baronial meeting as much as possible, and stay until the site is cleared and locked.
  • Able to serve at least 2, but no more than 3, years.
  • Previous experience as an officer, or good working knowledge of how the officers’ group functions.
  • Social media savvy – most communication from Kingdom and the BoD is first provided via Facebook now, so to be on top of things an active presence at least on that platform is highly recommended.
  • Experience managing teams.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Cool under pressure.
  • Comfortable attending in-person activities in most circumstances.

Baronial archery tournament postponed: Since an early sunset will prevent having the tournament on Sept. 28, it has been postponed until spring.

Site security: The electronic code that locks and unlocks the door is being changed and put on a timer. This means we cannot enter before our rental time, and everyone must be out of the building before 10 p.m. or they will be locked inside. The church has installed security cameras on both doors and the gym.

Opening Ceremonies: Saturday, Aug. 6, 10:30 a.m. The barony will meet at Midrealm Royal to march as a group to Opening Ceremonies on the battlefield.

Populace Archery and Thrown Weapons Muster and Cleftlands Group Photo: Sunday, Aug. 7, 1 p.m. Meet at the baronial tent on the battlefield. Participants will march to the castle on the battlefield for the photo; archery combatants will continue on to the archery field.

Populace Armored Combatants Muster: Monday, Aug. 8, 9 a.m. Meet at camp Three Bears, located at N-17 by the North Gate.

Populace Rapier Combatants Muster: Friday, Aug. 12, 1 p.m. Meet at camp Three Bears.

 Ohio Scottish Games, June 25, at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds. Armored combat and rapier fighters are needed. The barony’s location is in grass and shade. NOWM AWARDS CORRECTION

Duke Sir Laurelen Darksbane received a Royal Augmentation of Arms, a beacon enflamed, at NOWM. Last week’s minutes listed the award as a Kingdom Augmentation of Arms. Apologies to Duke Laurelen for the error.

OFFICER ANNOUNCEMENTS

Exchequer: Since this is the second meeting after NOWM, no more receipts for expenses connected with the event will be accepted.

Social Media: Photos are needed to freshen our Instagram account. See the social media coordinator, Lord Hrafnkell Inn Raudi Eykelsson, if you have some to share.

Martial activities: Outside martial activities will be paused when the heat index is 103 degrees or above.

Preregistration:  The preregistration deadline has passed.

Pennsic Break: The last baronial meeting before Pennsic will be July 20. We will resume meetings on Aug. 24.

Awards: There is still time to recommend Cleftlands for awards to be given out at Midrealm court at Pennsic. See our Seneschal, Lady Claricia, for details on how to do that.

Pennsic 50 History Display: Mistress Elizabeth is in charge of the Pennsic 50 History Display, happening next year. See her to volunteer or for more information.

Cleftlanders represented: Their Excellencies encourage all Cleftlands to display their baronial tabards and belt favors at Pennsic.

OFFICER OPENINGS

Demo Coordinator: Since Lord Carl is stepping down, the job will be handled by Chatelaine Lady Jacquelinne, until a new demo coordinator takes over. If you would like to help organize a demo, see her. The application can be found athttp://www.cleftlands.org/officer-application/

Revel Coordinator: This person plans themes for the monthly revels. See Claricia if you are interested.

GUILD ANNOUNCEMENTS

Armorers Guild: This guild will NOT meet on Thursday, June 23, in Berea. The host requires that participants be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 attend. See Baron Calum for details.

Archery Guild: Practice sessions are being held on some Sundays from 4-6 p.m. in Richmond Heights. Participants must be fully vaccinated. See Forester Cadfan for details.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Regular Event: If you know of a possible site where the event could be held, notify our seneschal, Lady Claricia. She is considering putting the event on the Kingdom calendar for Nov. 5. Bids are being accepted.

OLD BUSINESS

Baronial property: An inventory of baronial property is underway. If you are holding baronial property, please contact our seneschal, Lady Claricia. People holding baronial property must sign a contract, per the SCA BOD. This does not include officer regalia or items stored at the meeting site. Contracts are due to Lady Claricia by July 31.

 Exchequer: We are asking for $2 per meeting, or $50 per year, to cover the cost of the meeting hall rental. The rent has increased over the years, and we had to pay for the entire month during the period when meetings were twice a month.

 Quartermaster: The quartermaster must be notified at least two weeks in advance if a member wishes to borrow baronial gear.

 COVID-19 and Baronial meetings: Meetings will be held weekly for the foreseeable future. We will move outside when the weather permits; bring lawn chairs. Set-up starts at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. Masks are required indoors for all Cleftlands meetings and Midrealm SCA activities.
