IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW

Crown Tournament and Kingdom A&S: Cleftlands will host this Kingdom-level event May 27-28 (Memorial Day weekend), 2023 at the Ashtabula Fairgrounds. Due to the change in dates from Fall Coronation to May, we need of a day-of event steward. Anyone interested should talk to our seneschal Mistress Angharad or Our Excellencies Pietro and Aurelia. The person will be selected at the officers meeting Feb. 8. See THL Jolicia atte Northclyfe if you want to know more about the event.

NOWM: We have a bid for NOWM, to be held June 10 in Wellington. Event Steward Lord Meinhart needs assistance, and is looking for an intern to shadow him with an eye to taking over the event in the future.

A&S Field Trip: Four Seasons Tapestries at the Cleveland Museum of Art

Description: The Four Seasons Tapestries were designed in the 16th century (c. 1535) and woven in the 17th century.  They are so delicate that they are rarely displayed.  Come see them before they return to storage after 2/19/23, and then explore more of the museum.

Description: Odysseus used it to get girls. Ancient cities lived and died by it. Sometimes literally. Hildegarde Von Bingen hated it. There will also be a brief discussion of reliable sources in the mundane world. And yes, there will be samples from Greece that survived the trek home in my luggage last Fall.  Handouts available.

DESSERT REVELS

Dec. 14: Yule Revel. Activities include dancing, caroling (music will be supplied to anyone wishing to sing some seasonal tunes), and a Hanukkah display. Bring site tokens to decorate a Yule tree and treats to share. Listen to background music by Musica Nebulae. There will be no combat activities.

“Cookie” Exchange: Like a cookie exchange, bring one or more entries, equivalent in effort and/or expense to a dozen cookies (around $5). For every entry you bring, you take one entry home. So, if you bring a dozen felt sewing kits, you could take home a dozen items from other people. Entries could include: A dozen cookies (because cookies are always good). A small fruitcake. A pair of beeswax candles. A stamped draw string bag. A linen napkin. Or anything else you can think of that people may appreciate. Items should arrive by 7 p.m. to be set up in the viewing area. We’ll start the selection of items to take home around 8:30.

  • Forester Muldonny McVrw, inspired by Forester Gwyneth Cole, won last week’s Cleftlands Rapier Tournament.
  • At last weekend’s Christmas Tournament, Sir Wyngfang took second place in the heavy tournament, and Lady Jaquelinne and Baron Pietro took the top two positions in the rapier tournament.

Congratulations Forester Muldonny, Rapier Champion!

On Wednesday, November 30th, the Cleftlands lists were opened up to all rapier combatants to test their mettle in the annual tournament. Numerous inspired combatants stepped forth and took to the lists. When the flurry of steel and sweat slowed and the last blows were counted, one rapier combatant emerged victorious.

Congratulations to Forester Muldonny McVriw inspired by Forester Gwyneth Cole, who received a pair of of sterling silver stamped letter rings crafted by the hands of Barone Pietro Nicolo da San Tebaldo.

Special thanks to our marshals: Sir Silverthorn of Drachenmoor and Lord Reinhardt mit dem Bart; at the list table: Lady Jaquelinne de la Deicier and Lady Richildis of Rydychen; and to our many heralds throughout the night under the direction of Rav Ezra Ha-Yona.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW

 Baroness Angharad ferch Tangwystl has been selected as the next Seneschal beginning January 1, 2023. We thank Lady Claricia de la Mere for her hard work over the past years.

There will be no meetings on November 23, December 21 and December 28 due to the holidays. Meetings will resume Jan. 4, 2023.

DESSERT REVELS

Nov. 30:  Baronial Fencing Tournament. Each combatant will need a person to be their inspiration. Introductions and the processional will start at 7:15, with the matches starting at 7:30 p.m. Please bring treats to share. See rapier marshal Lord Reinhardt for details.

Armorers Guild: This guild meets most Thursdays in Berea. There will be no guild meeting the week of Thanksgiving. The host requires that participants be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 to attend. See Baron Calum for details.

OLD BUSINESS

No more masks: As of Dec. 1, there will be no mask requirements or contact tracing in any Kingdom of the SCA.

Exchequer: Members are asked to donate $2 per meeting, or $50 per year, to cover the cost of the meeting hall rental.

Quartermaster: The quartermaster must be notified at least two weeks in advance if a member wishes to borrow baronial gear.

Baronial meetings: Set-up starts at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. We must vacate the building before 10 p.m.

Officer Opening – Minister of Arts & Sciences

The Barony of the Cleftlands is accepting applications for Minister of Arts & Sciences. This position requires current SCA membership. If you would like to be considered for this position, please fill out the application online. The submission will be received by the Baron, Baroness, Seneschal, and Minister of Arts & Sciences for review prior to being presented at an Officers meeting for final polling. The Minister of Arts and Sciences is responsible for fostering arts and sciences within the Barony. They organize classes for weekly meetings, and potentially other activities such as challenges in the goal of promoting and encouraging participation in the arts and sciences. The MoAS is usually at meetings to help organize classes, but this is not required (or they may choose to send a deputy instead). As our society becomes increasingly comfortable in this virtual age, the MoAS will also create virtual events, update calendars, and use social media and email to promote activities. This position will file reports on projects, research, and classes that members of the community have taken or taught. Qualifications include:
  • Paid member of the SCA (required)
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Good grasp of social media usage (specifically Facebook for creating events and promoting activities)
  • A passion for learning and appreciation of the arts
  • A creative mindset for developing activities is helpful
  • Ability to attend local meetings as needed

Congratulations Mistress Angharad ferch Tangwystl, Seneschal!

The Cleftlands would like to welcome Her Excellency, Mistress Angharad ferch Tangwystl as Seneschal! She will step into this role on January 1, 2023.
