IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW: NOWM ON JUNE 11

Thursday, June 9, is the deadline for NOWM pre-registration. To register, go to http://nowm.cleftlands.org/ and look for the yellow box on the right side of the webpage. The gate will accept a regular check or cashier’s check, but no cash. Bring lawn chairs and items for small day camps.

Help is needed on Friday to set up the site, including the large baronial tent. Help is also needed at the gate during the event. Contact Lord Meinhart for details.

Their Majesties of Midrealm and Aethelmearc will be in attendance, along with local territorial barons.

 Ohio Scottish Games, June 25, at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds. Armored combat and rapier fighters are needed. The barony’s location is in grass and shade. There will be access by car to our location until 7:30 a.m., then not again until the event ends at 10 p.m. Our area will be set up the night before; see Lord Carl if you can help. We will participate in a parade at noon; please bring banners. We will also do “something cool” during a Pipe and Drum Tattoo at 6 p.m. The baronial area will pack up after the tattoo. PAST EVENT REPORTS

Road to Rouen, a 14th-century themed event in New York state, was a tremendous success, with many great deeds of honor and prowess witnessed. Several Cleftlanders, including Their Excellencies, attended. Plans are being made for it to be held again two years from now.

Thanks to those who attended last weekend’s 200th Street Stroll demo and helped make it a success.

Baronial property: An inventory of baronial property is underway. If you are holding baronial property, please contact our seneschal, Lady Claricia. People holding baronial property must sign a contract, per the SCA BOD. This does not include officer regalia or items stored at the meeting site. Contracts are due to Lady Claricia by July 31.

 Exchequer: We are asking for $2 per meeting, or $50 per year, to cover the cost of the meeting hall rental. The rent has increased over the years, and we had to pay for the entire month during the period when meetings were twice a month.

Midrealm heirs: The Middle Kingdom has new heirs, Prince Dag Thorgrimsson and Princess AnneMarie de Garmeaux. Draco Invictus!

Possible COVID-19 exposure: Midrealm.org reports that a person who attended Kingdom A&S and Crown Tourney last weekend tested positive on May 30.

Baronial meetings: Meetings will be held weekly for the foreseeable future. We will move outside when the weather permits; bring lawn chairs. Masks are required indoors for all Midrealm SCA activities. Set-up starts at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m.

Pennsic: There are are 16 days left to pre-register; go to the website for details.

AWARDS

At Crown Tournment and Kingdom A&S, Lady Ragna storraoa Ulfsdottir won the winner of the Queen’s Prize in the Queens’s Prize A&S Challenge, and THL Jolicia atte Northclyfe was named a Kingdom A&S Champion for the reign of Arch and Runa.

A&S Class: Basic Viking Wire Weaving

Bringing a needle nose or cone nose pliers and wire cutter will be helpful, though I will have loaner tools available. I will have a couple draw plates to use in class. Wire and equipment will be available for a practice piece; class kits w/instructions are $5 apiece, plus I have a couple full kits for $25 which include tools and drawplate

A&S Demo: Making Iris Green Pigment

Irises are beautiful on an early summer day. Now, Aiden shows how to turn those blooms into a beautiful medieval pigment for illumination.

A&S Class: Making a Wire Ring Brooch

Just in time for Road to Rouen, join this make-and-take class. We will make a 14th century wire ring brooch based on artifacts from Geoff Egan and Frances Pritchard’s book Dress Accessories c. 1150-c1450: Medieval Finds from Excavations in London: 3.

Congratulations Prince Dag and Princess AnneMarie!

On Saturday, May 28th in the Barony of Middle Marches their Royal Majesties King Arch and Queen Runa, hosted the 104th Crown Tournament at the Middle Kingdom. Once the skies cleared and the blows were counted, the Midrealm rejoiced in the knowledge that the heirs to the throne had been revealed. We are pleased to welcome Prince Dag Thorgrimsson  and Princess AnneMarie de Garmeaulx. Congratulations to Their Royal Highnesses!

Masks required: The SCA once again requires masks at all official indoor activities. An activity is “official” if it is announced on a baronial or SCA Facebook page, or the Cleftlist.

Road to Rouen: If you are attending Road to Rouen, check the COVID-19 policies in that kingdom. The policies are different from those in Midrealm.

May Dessert Revel: Armored Tournament

Their Excellencies Barone Pietro e Baronessa Aurelia della Cleftlands cordially invite you to their Armored Combat Tournament and spring-themed dessert revel and held on Wednesday, May 25 at St. John of the Cross located at 140 Richmond Rd, Euclid, OH 44143.

Tournament Details: This is a double elimination 3-person team tournament with non-repeating weapons styles per individual match. If competing in the armored tournament, please arrive early enough to check in as a team at the list table as well as reporting individually to the heralds who will not only announce you and your consort, but help you process into the tourney by Order of Precedence. Non-combatants, please do honor to your worthy champion and dress your best to support their efforts. All authorized combatants are encouraged to participate, regardless of rank, station, or location. If you have any questions, please contact Lord Tryggr Gillason <ironkey@cleftlands.org> for details.

The tournament procession will begin no later than 7:45 PM.

Additionally, Mistress Angharad ferch Tangwystl has issued an Arts & Sciences challenge. “As we return to Dessert Revels, I’d like to challenge you to complete a project including flowers, leaves, and other botanical elements. Whether a ‘squashed bug’ scroll blank, some rose-vine embroidery, marzipan cherries, or pictures of your actual garden, exercise your imagination and skill to celebrate the glory of spring. Bring your creations, complete or in progress, to our May Dessert Revel on the 25th!”

  • Kingdom removed ALL Covid restrictions as of April 3. Their Excellencies have decided that Cleftlands shall follow suit for Baronial activities.
    • We no longer require a proof of vaccination nor a negative test result to attend Baronial SCA activities. No attendance taken, no waivers, no restrictions of any kind.
    • Groups and activities may determine additional restrictions, so you could still see rules in place at things like guild meetings, etc.
    • Go to midrealm.org/reopening for updated information.

    • Lord Hrafnkell Inn Rauði Eykelsson is the new social media coordinator.
    • Lord Reinhardt mit dem Bart is the next rapier marshal, and will take over from Lady Ragna as of May 1.

  • Baronial meetings will be held every other week in  April. In May, we will return to weekly meetings, and. hope to hold them outdoors as soon as weather permits. The next meeting is May 4, starting at 7 p.m. Set-up starts at 6:30 p.m.
  • Bids will be accepted for a fall Regular Event, or a winter 2023 event. If we want to have one in 2022, it would be good to have a bid in by May; that would give us 6 months to a November date.

Guilds and Guild Adjacent Activities

Some guilds are hosting virtual online activities; please contact the person in charge for details or see the Cleftlands Facebook group for more information. Since there are no more COVID-19 restrictions, guilds can just meet normally. Guilds are the special interest groups of the SCA: people working together to focus on a particular activity. Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings.

When hosted at a private location, the owners may have additional requirements and restrictions for attendance. Please check with them for details.

  • Our new Baron and Baroness will be the Honorable Lord Pietro da San Tebaldo and Mistress Aurelia Rosetti. Thanks to all of the baronial candidates, and to outgoing Baron and Baroness Crispin and Gianna for their years of service.
  • Baron and Baroness Crispin and Gianna held a baronial court. The following awards were given:

  • Dressed to Kill /Baronial Investiture will take place April 9 at Divinity Lutheran Church in Cleveland. The theme is 14th-century life.  There is no attendance cap. Pre-registration ends Friday, April 8. The site fee includes a bag lunch. The class schedule is filled. Mistress Milesent is organizing a fashion show; contact her if you would like to participate.
